Men's 12-Inch Softball One Of Knox Park's New Activities Last year's incredible final score of 47-28 in the championship series of MpHenry men's l2-inch softball is a feat not likely to happen again. With forceful winds blowing out to the 275- foot fence in left field, Wayne's clubbed 10 home runs that record breaking night at Petersen park to demolish the Fox Hole Tap. But now that M e H e n r y ' s m o s t popular summer league has switched to the new playing facility at Knox park, the complexion of the game has also changed. With a 300-foot fence on the main lighted field and a 285-foot target on the ancillary field, the home run swing has been replaced by the singles hitter who can spray the ball inside the e x t e n d e d o u t f i e l d territory. This is the new offense despite the addition of an unrestricted flight ball. Laat season, Gary Gilpin established a new league record with 15 roundtrippers. With just over a quarter of this season computed, Vinnie Freund and Tom Burke share the home run lead with two each, far below last season's pace. For the record, Irish DeCiccio hit the . first out of the park homer during an exhibition game at the dedication ceremonies, and Freund hit the first regular season round- t ripper as he homered opening day. The men's 12-inch league, played Monday and Wednesday nights, is one of many activities that will attract hun dreds to the relatively new facility this sum mer. According to Parks It Recreation Director Pete Merkel, the 8.1 acres, located between Green St. and Route 31 south of Edgebrook Heights, was purchased by theraty of McHenry in April 1979 from Edwin Knox with the understanding that the ares would be used as a public park area. Following dedication ceremonies in March of last year over which McHenry Mayor Joseph Stanek presided, the park has afforded the community several oportunities for leisure time activity. Besides the men's 12- inch softbsll league, other McHenry leagues will use the Knox ball fields this year that will keep them occupied almost every night of the week. The women's Tuesday and Thursday night 16- inch softball league has also moved from Petersen park to the Knox ball fields, and Friday nights and Sunday afternoons will be occupied by the youth 18-inch league. Soccer goals are soon to be put up with the June 14 start of the youth and Junior soccer programs. Boys and girls ages 8-18 are eligible to participate in these eight week programs. Children will also enjoy the natural playground equipment which has been donated by local organizations. Merkel indicated that more of this equipment will be brought in in the near future. Picnic shelters are a v a i l a b l e f o r f a m i l y outings and a con cession stand is available in the pool house. Lockerroom- bat brooms are also located in the pool house. The tennis courts and the pool, both of which opened laat July, are now available to the public. The tennis courts will be mainly for open play, but will have adult tennis lessons on Tuesday and Thursday mornings beginning June 15. The swimming pool is open to the public with seperate fees charged to residents and non residents. The swim team, under the direction of McHenry H.S. coach - Mike Shanahan, will also use the pool at interval times. For further in formation on this or any program, contact the Department of Parks & Recreation at 344-3300.
