After, all, two of the first three regular season defeats in two and one half seasons were at the hands of the West End Pub ball club both in 1981. But the Tap saved eight of its IS base hits for its final two at bats. Coupled with three base on K»it« a 6-3 deficit was turned into a 13-6 Fox Hole victory. Bill Meyers on the mound came up with 'game saver' plays and the Fox hok iimeta civum two aouoie piays Pub first baseman Tom Wallen played another exceptional game at first. WestE. Two batters later Bill Meyers slapped a Bob Traux pitch over the fence in left center. That hit put the Tap in ihe lead for good at 7-6. Freund would drive in a run in the sixth before being lifted for pinch runner Carl Moesche. Bill Meyers knocked in one more run with a base hit giving him four RBI's for the evening. But the big hit of the inning was Gary 'Gulps' Gilpin's three-run blast to left which put the game out of reach. Both Meyers and Gilpin had three hits each to pace the Fox Hole offense. Twig Miller added a pair of singles. Bobby Truax and Wayne Roewer had three hits each for West End Pub- Kiss It. Tom Burke and Paul Petty added two hits apiece. Both teams were even on total hits with 13. The Fox Hole had six "gift" base on balls compared to just three for the Pub. Four of those walks turned into runs which hurt Kiss It. Defensively Twig Miller in right and West End Pub secured its second standing by defeating King's 12-4 in game two. Tom Burke had three hits including a triple and three RBI's to lead the winners Bobby Truax put the Pub on the board initially with a sok> home ran in the first plus a single, double and one more RB1.» "Doc" Wallen was good for three hits and excellent defensive play at first base. Wayne Roewer, Rich Wiegman and Terry Hovseth all had two hits to keep season averages over the -900 mark. Willie Howard, Ride Sorenson and Mike Rankin all had two hits each, however , no one else could manage even a single in the King's Row 6-hit offense brought an early retirement of Dave Miller as skipper of the "new tradition" in McHenry 12-inch play. little John's 9 119 9 9 1- • Peer l.-Jack's S.S. 6 • 4 • • J x • 12 King's Row made it two straight over the Whale's Tail as they romped to a 19-5 victory. Dan McCauliffe was the star for the Snack Shop going 3-for-3 including an inside the park home run. Dave Jackson added a perfect 2-for-2 plus two base on balls while Brian Greve had three RBI's. Little John's stranded nine runners on base including the bases loaded in the final inning. Also two doubles plays plus a runner thrown out at the plate all cost the Eastern Division cellar dwellers a victory. The loss also Huemann's Water Conditioning scored four runs in the first inning and went on defeat Jewel Park 5-3 in a nailbiter! Huemann's defense was sharp times with Bob Greve providing the few fans left in the staidum with a tremendous running grab on the first play of the game. At other times, however, errors almost cost than the game. Jewel Park again had the basertmners but left 10 stranded on base. Jewel was also frustrated when a swinging strikeout led to a doubleplay when a runner left the base early. Before the strikeout the bases were loaded with only one gone. Also in the last inning Jewel had the tying runs on base but failed to score. Gary Fairchild nearly missed the game but came in time to knock in three runs with a two-ran single and sacrifice fly. Dan Stanowski, Frank Cuda and Bud Smith added two hits each. • Jim Cook had two htis for Jewel Park. Defensively Larry Lowrey made a fine running catch to rob Joe Bauml of extra bases. Winners from the McHenry County IYC Tournament will advance to the state IYC to be held July 12-13 at the Rail Golf Course in Springfield. Last year, Steve Svec, a standout golfer on the McHenry H.S. team, qualified at McHenry Country Club to advance to state competition. Betsy Stephenson, McHenry resident and former McHenry H.S. athlete, will take her Round Lake H S. Panther softball team to the IHSA state tournament in Pekin this weekend. The Panthers defeated Jacobs in the regional finals last week Tuesday and Rockford Jefferson in the sectional finals this week Monday to become a distinguished member of the "Elite Eight" schools throughout the state of Illinois. This is Ms. Stephenson's third year teaching and coaching in the Round Lake sciiooi district as she spent two years at the middle school before moving up to the high school this year. This past fall, she coached the varsity volleyball team to a district cham pionship and to the final match at sectionals. She also coached freshman and sophomore basketball. "This is the first time in the history of Round Lake high school that a team of any kind has gone to a state tour nament," Ms. Stephenson said recently. " And these girls have played good softball to get this far." Good softball is nothing new to Ms Stephenson as she reflects upon her college career at Western Illinois University when in her senior year, WIU went to the college World Series ranked number one in the nation. "The feeling is still the same, whether as a coach or a player," she Cardinals Pace Youth League Majors The Cardinals remain on top of the McHenry junior youth league major division as they tipped the Condors in a nip and tuck battle 9-8. The Bluebirds won two of three downing the Ravens 17-3 with Rich Hoffman and Kevin Justen leading the way with two hits each. The Orioles stopped the Bluebirds as Ricky Burke and Keith Schultz combined for a no-hitter in the 5-2 victory. The Bluebirds, however, edged the Eagles 6-4 as Wayne Margraff tosses a three-hitter and Bill Luwan belted a pair of hits. Ben Koczar added a double for the winners and sparkled at third base defen sively. The Hawks kept pace with a 5-3 victory over the Orioles as winning pitcher Scotty Miller stifled the Oriole attack. The Falcons clawed their way beck into the race with pitching and heavy hitting winning three in a row after dropping their first two games of the season. Matt Roy no-hit the Hawks in the Falcons first victory, a 3-2 decision. Iri their second game, everybody got Into the act as the Falcons exploded for 13 runs while Kevin Walter shut out the Owls on one hit. Dan Gildemiester, Rich White, Eric Heinz, and Corey Berg led the Falcon hit parade. The Falcons extended their string to three as Kevin Walter's long home ran sparked the Falcons along with Matt % Roy's three hits in an 8-3 victory over the Eagles. Matt Martin led the Eagle attack and choked off a rally grabbing a clothesliner and turning it into a doubleplay. We have been very fortunate this year with the weather, and are beginning to think that if the sun is shining it's Tuesday. June 8 was no exception and was a fun day win. lose or draw for all. Jan Rades was ac cused of aiding the enemy when she chipped up on the green and knocked her opponent's ball just inches from the cup Lu LaBay chipped in on one and Libby Johnson had a chip-in on nine Betty Gossell chipped in on four for a birdie. Joan Clark said it was a sad day when she got a par on ten and her opponent, this correspondent, chip ped in for a bird. "You can't even win a hole with a par around here." she \said. Ask Ruth Vines and Lou Stine the difference between a Pro Staff and a Pinnacle I think the answer is one lost hole Judy Schmitt will just have to get a larger name tag She is going through an identity crisis when her own team doesn't know their captain!
