Another good friend, Ken Espey has passed away after a long illness. As McHenry's Chief of Police before his retirement, he made many friends and had a finger on the pulse of activities. If he was strict he was also fair. Like so many others, Ken Espey earned his retirement, then had too few years to enjoy it. He was a friend whom we will miss. Getting dressed this morning I wondered whet became of men's garters. When they went out of style, the term "sloppy socks" came into use. Everybody wants subsidy help from the federal government these days. Did you ever wonder where all that money comes from. Most of us learned sometime along the way that it doesn't grow on trees. If you "phone me up", as Grandma used to say, don't hang up after a couple of toots. I may not hear the first ring. It may take a little time to get out of my easy chair. I may be doing my homework - - like running the vacumn cleaner. (That should get a rise out of a couple of people). Or I may be in the reading room where everybody should have a phone. Being aware of our wedding an niversary, "Friendly Bob" Adams remarked, "After Alvina has put up with you all those years, you should be singing 'I Married An Angel'." There is only one Bob Adams. One of our reader-helpers, Betty Phalen, phoned to tell me to look on page 162 of the June Reader's Digest where Christine H. Shadle of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is recognized. Christine is the daughter of Paul and Elanor (Pries) Shadle, former McHenryites. Once strong, the reluc tance of congressmen to cut back on established benefit programs could be seen to waiver in the face of continu ing disagreement over the federal budget. Senior citi zens found little comfort in the word that <thcrc was a strong movement in Con gress to postpone, or elimin ate entirely, yearly cost-of- living increases for Social Security beneficiaries. There could be no joy in the word there was also an effort--to increase payments for Medi care or reduce the benefits offered--under the program. Cost-of-living increases were applied to Social Secur ity several years ago when Congress realized that each check received by a recipi ent had decreased purchase value because of inflation. Times are no better for Soci al Security recipients, so with drawal of the cost-of-living increasing, even for the sake of doing something about the huge federal deficit, repre sents a 180-degree turn to in dividual hard times. There needs to be consider ation of the many Ameri cans who, year after year, paid regularly into the Social Security System with dollars of high purchasing power and who now need a return on that investment to maintain a sufficient standard of living. ft.
