To attract the increased viewership, many of whom have turned to afternoon television for entertainment during their vacations, each soap offers up its most appealing performers in the most enthralling storylines. Like thoroughbreds lined up at the starting gate, each show is exhibiting its best colors in its quest to win the ratings race. Here's an overview of the favorites that may win. place or show. "Days of Our Lives" should be the biggest winner because of its siz zling love story between police detective Roman Brady (Wayne Northrop) and demure psychiatrist Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall). Roman literally saved Marlena from the Salem Strangler's grasp and the two fell in love. While Northrop is not conventionally good look ing, his sensuality and sin cerity have drawn torrents of fan mail from women across the country. It's undeniable that he and Miss Hall have the essential chemistry that makes their pairing almost electric. "Edge of Night's" sum mer will revolve around teen-aged Jody Travis (Lorl LoughMn) and a painting her mother bequeathed her that evil forces want to wrest from her. Complicat ing matters is the appear- Wayne Northrop and Diedre Hall ance of handsome painter Chad Sutherland (Mark Andrews) who may just wrest Jody herself from longtime love Gavin Wylie (Mark Arnold). "Guiding Light" will score a daytime first when archaelogist Quint McCord (Michael Tylo) and his assistant and love interest Nola Reardon (Lisa Brown) dive in quest of remnants of a lost civiliza tion in the waters off of St Croix. The underwater sequences will be taped on location, and both actors are currently preparing for this work by taking scuba diving lessons. "As the World Turns' will also be taping on loca tion, in Jamaica, in a sequence that will see evil John Dixon (Larry Brygg- man) wed Arielle Aldrin (Judith Blazer) only to see their happiness destroyed by secrets from the bride's past. ©IMtComputog
