Fall semester registration has begun at McHenry County college and the deadlines for students who need financial aid to attend school next fall are rapidly approaching. Dennis Wentworth, director of financial aid at the college, explains that it is taking eight weeks for the college to hear about federal applications and 10 weeks* to about applications for the State Scholarship. "Students need to pick up plications for financial aid as qtdckly as possible, fill them out and send them in," Wentworth warned. aid Illinois .,>• application is needed to II of the federal and state Only one apply for all aid programs available to students. "The only other application students might need is one to get an Illinois Guaranteed Student Loan and thoee forms are available from savings and loans and other lending institutions." Wentworth said. The family financial statement application available at the college ia used to consider a student's for three federal programs-the! program oompoeed of large federally subsidized grants baaed on need, the supplemental opportunity grant program and the college work-study programs. The same form also is an application for the Illinois State Scholarship which P«y« tuition, Wentworth explained. f Students who will be financial aid in order to att in the fall but who fail to i the end of July will And forced to either pay tuition them selves and be reimbursed or to sit out the fall semester and enroll in spring, Wentworth warned. Acreage Reports Due Soon McHenry county farmers who have not filed an acreage report with the Agricultural Stabilization and Con servation service have until July 15 to do so, according to Susan A. Maraccini, county executive director of the county ASCS office. The acreage reports will be used to determine compliance with farm programs and to protect 1963 crop acreage bases. Program participants are required to report the actual planted acreage on a field-by-field basis. As of June 21, 251 farmers in the county had reported fall-seeded and spring- seeded crops. "These farmers will be eligible for price support loans, target prices and other program benefits," Maraccini said. Farmers who did not sign up for the acreage reduction program also could benefit by certifying their planted acres because the 1963 base acree will be based on the certified 1962 acreage, she said. ASCS will randomly check farms to verify that the acreage reports are accurate and also provide aerial photographs for farmers to identify their fields. To be sure reports are accurate and avoid unnecessary worry over the loea of program benefits, farmers may request measurement service. The cost is nominal and the measurements are guaranteed for the crop year. "All farmers are urged to file an acreage report with our office before the July 15, 1962 deadline," the ASCS official said. The office is open bet ween 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. He said cuts in federal funds, widely reported in the preas, have remitted in the longer pun isalng time for the application forma, but will not mean an actual cut in financial aid money available to students at MCC during the coming academic year when compared to last year. "However, the funds have been frozen at the eatne amount so that inflation increaaes and MCCs tuition hike will result in students having leaa buying power for the same money," Wentworth said. He explained that the federal cuts widely reported win more likely hit home in the 1963-64 school year. "That will be the bleak year unless some phingM are made," he said. One possible alternative for students who do not receive responses on their financial aid applications in time for fall semester is a Student loan available through the college itaelf. Limited to 9160 maximums, the loans will pay tuition for a course and allow the student 90 days to repay the money, interest free. There ia a small application charge for the loans and approximately 93,000 is currently available for such loans. The MCC board recently accepted a donation which will add 9900 each month to the loan fund until there ia approximately 99,000 to lend out each semester, Wentworth said.
