Ask Immunity For Damages In Snowmobile Hazard Areas Senator Jack Schaffer, R.-Cary, has announced that the General Assembly has passed, and sent to Governor Thompson, his bill which will provide immunity from civil damages to persons or associations who poet warnings sbout hazards for snowmobiles. "Believe it or not", said Senator Schaffer, "members of snowmobile clubs, the Illinois Department of Conservation and other interested persons are being prevented from placing warning markers on dangerous snowmobile locations because of possible legal con sequences. Therefore, I introduced SB 1588, slightly amended in the Houae of Representatives, which will eliminate the possibility of liability to persoos who in good faith attempt to put up warning signs in areas where snowmobilint? is permitted." Senator Schaffer said he's confident that Governor Thompaon will sign his bill into law so that this coming winter warning markers can be posted in such areas as the Fox river and Chain of Lakes. "Last season there were at least two deaths and a number of injuries that could have been prevented," said Senator Schaffer, "if certain hazards on state waterways had bete properly marked with warning signs. "It makes sense to me that we should protect people who are responsibly trying to make snowmobilimt as safe as possible. My bill does just that and is especially needed in my district where snowmobiling is a very popular sport." The bill was sponsored in the House by Rep. David N. Barkhausen (R.-Waukegan).
