They started by having a pizza party where gallons of soda and plenty of pizza were con sumed. One of the leaders has a large swimming pool in her backyard so that is where they all met for their next outing. Everyone had a good time practicing swimming strokes that also helped them work towards a badge. Before the day was over the girls enjoyed a picnic lunch and made plans for the campout the weekend of July 9-11. On July 9 some mothers drove the girls to Shabbona camp near Harvard for their weekend of roughing it. They had a wonderful time cooking over an open fire and learning the basics of living in the wfKKis. It rained a lot while they were there but it didn't dampen anyone's spirits. When the weather kept them under cover they busied themselves weaving headbands and belts. These girls are now busy designing a float to enter in McHenry's Fiesta Day parade on Aug. 1. GOOD OLD DAYS Can you picture Lakeland Park with only four homes? That is what il was like 29 years ago when Roy J and Dorothy Meineke moved here from Oak Park. Way back then mailboxes weren't out in front of your house. You had to go out to 120 to pick up the mail. The closest school bus stop was also on 120 which meant during bad weather the mothers took turns driving the kids to the highway. Dorothy said it was real spooky at night when there weren't many neigh-, bors and no street lights. It is hard to believe this very populated area was once a quiet little area in the middle of nowhere. SURPRISE When grandma Joyce Cserep had her birthday on July 12 she thought it would be a quiet day staying in her trailer at Fish Lake. Was she ever surprised when two cars pulled in with all her grandchildren and two daughters Sue and Cathy with her husband, John. They came bearing gifts and a birthday cake. After the cake was gone grandpa put on his swimming trunks and took all seven kids into the lake for an afternoon of fun in the water. Jami had such a good time sh£ was ready to go back the next day but ^we-explained her grand parents would neecNaJ recuperate. i e a . t o BIRTHDAYS A very happy birthday to Gladys Mayer and Jimmv Watkins Sr.. on July 21.
