Variety spice of equine show in 'Horse County' By Anthony Oliver Plaindealer staff writer McHENRY -- "We would like to incor porate every kind of equine show into the Open Horse Show," says John Crowden, chairman of the annual event. "The Horse Show was a quarter-horse show for about 15 years." Crowden says last year there were 529 en tries and this year should show more than 800. He notes there are a sizeable number of entries from out-of-county and out-of-state each year at the McHenry County Fair. This is the second year Crowden has been in charge of the show. "There'll be five registered classes of halter, which is pretty big," Crowden says, "along with three unregistered and the jum ping classes -- which are not normal in an open show." Crowden says this will be the first year there will be lights for the horse show, which includes 37 classes overall. "The fair board was gracious enough to give us lights this year," he says. "That was a big expenditure. "We're using two judges: Greg Olson of Portage, Wis., and Linda Norman of Woodstock." One of the highlights of this year's horse show will be the presentation of a special horse cooler to the grand champion. The cooler will be in honor of Norma Luedtke, who has served for more than 25 years as the head clerk of the horse show at the McHenry County Fair. Another recent addition to the horse show, Crowden notes there will be a "real good" Trail Class, which usually attracts a good deal of interest. > "McHenry County is the largest horse- populated county in the United States," he says. "We beat Texas, Colorado and all the others." A director of the McHenry County Horseman's Association, Crowden com ments, "There are some really great people out there and they're very supportive." Crowden says he has met people with just about every breed of horse. "Last year there was a Clydesdale in the two-wheeled Open Pleasure Driving Class." Crowden got the job when Ev Hunter, who runs the tractor pull, noted there was no one in charge of the horse show and the fair was in danger of losing it. Crowden and other in terested horsemen and women sat down and put together the program. "The fair board went along with us and kept the $1,900 purse," Crowden says. "Then I was asked to do it again this year. Entry is made at the post (just before the event), so there is no way to tell exactly what the turnout will be. Crowden says the trophies for the various events often are donated by the breed clubs in the area. / A big business, last year there was close to $3 million in horses and equipment at the McHenry County Fair, Crowden says.
