Actually, planning for the show begins before the pigs are born, according to Jim Hallisy, who is in his third year as a superintendent of the show. Bruce Otbrich of Woodstock and Les Finder of Marengo are also swine show superintendents. • About a month after the fair ends, the swine superintendents get together to hash over the latest show, bringing up the good and bad points. The show participants -- 4- H'ers and FFA members -- help out with comments about the show, Hallisy says. But the real work begins Tuesday when the pigs are hauled to the fairgrounds. It's then that the endless paper work begins for Thursday's 4-H and Junior shows, Friday's open show, Saturday's auction and Sun day's round-up. Last year, about 70 young pig-raisers showed their swine which numbered about 130, Hallisy says. Hallisy farms 320 acres on O'Brien Road. He has 90 head of milk cows and young stock, and raises 100 to 150 hogs from farrow to finish each year. In a change from last year, swine will be weighed and tagged as they get off the trailers on Tuesday. Last year, they were weighed on Wednesday, but "it was star ting to pinch on time, "Hallisy says. Before the pig gets off the trailer, its A couple of years ago, the swine show changed from a breeder show to a ter minal show because of an outbreak of psuedorabies and brucellosis, Hallisy says. In breeder shows with boars and gilts, the state requires three blood tests and an isolation period before the animal is shown. This becomes expensive and time- consuming, so the show was changed. In a market show, only one blood test is needed and there is no isolation period, since the animals are sold for slaughter. The swine shown at a market show cannot go back to the farm, while breeders can. "We've got the numbers here now, and a lot of kids go along with the market show," Hallisy says. He doubts that the fair will return to a breeder show, although there are some who would like it to return. Hallisy has been involved in pig shows since his younger days. "When I was in high school, my brother and I used to show pigs at fairs," he says. They showed at four county fairs and the Wisconsin State Fair. -- Now, Hallisy's sons Michael, 15, and Mark, 12, show spotted swine at the McHenry County Fair as rriembers of U* Hebron Helping Hands 4-H club. They will enter six pigs. Eight years ago, Hallisy was a state director for the northern region of the Il linois Spotted Swine Association. He resigned because of time constraints.
