The 1179 senior winner, Nicholas Pavkovic, will make a guest appearance during the adult talent contest at this year's fair. A math student at the Universi­ ty of Chicago, Pavkovic still plays piano and recently appeared with Lake Forest Sym­ phony at the Hawthorn Center in Vernon Hills. Another senior winner in 1990, Mike Ham­ mer is a junior majoring in voice at Nor­ thern Illinois University in DeKalb. Ham­ mer is lead vocalist for the university's Madrigal Singers. The leader of the Randy Legge Band, which won in 1973, works in Chicago, but he is not pursuing a career as professional musician. When the contest started there were no divisions, but in 1977, a senior division was created for participants age 15 and older, and for the first time this year, there will be an adult division for participants age 21 and Auditions will be held Sunday, Aug. 1, in Hansen Pavilion. From all the entries, judges will select eight finalists in each divi­ sion. The finalists then will compete for first, second and third places in each divi­ sion Friday evening, Aug. 6, during the fair. "I've always had a bent toward this kind of thing, so when it was decided to have a talent contest, I don't recall whether I was recruited or I volunteered," Tammeus says. "I guess maybe it was because I knew what I wanted to do, and not everyone else did. "I have a good staff. They know it's a lot of work, but it's also a lot of fun. And now, as in other years, there is the satisfaction of knowing that you have done something to help somebody else." This year Tammeus' assistants include another contest alumnus, Kenneth Kunaer, who with his wife, the former Kathy Ahrens, was part of the Bridge String Quartet in 1998. Kunzer is the stage and audio manager. Tammeus also is ably assisted by Stu Cohen of WIVS radio, as judging manager, and Kathy Thomas, who handles the secretarial and records duties.
