Auto repairman's wprk gets wrecked in the end By Dick Peterson Heraid staff writer HARVARD - BiD Kasort, an auto body repairman at Burkart Olds, spends hit ax- tra tin* making an old car look like new, or aa doaa aa ha can to it Then he wrecks it. Kasort im*t the other skle of crazy; he's a demolition derby driver. And he enjoys it He enjoys ramming cars, crinkling fenders and twisting chasis. "One reason is you can take all your frustrations out from all year long from the people who dont know how to drive," Kasort says. Some people drive in town as though they were in a demolition derby, he says. Kasort, who has rammed his way through 13 years of demolition derbies and will enter the McHenry County Fair derby Friday night, spends about 18 hours getting a car ready for a derby. He is helped out by pitmen Steve Santeler and Daren Higgins, both co-workers with Kazort. First, there are rules that have to be met before the car -- usually something with three wheels in the Junkyard -- can qualify to enter the field. All glass and chrome has to be removed, the gas tank must be anchored in the back seat, the doors welded the front doors "Moat of them are for safety," Kasort says. The driver must also wear a aaat belt and a helmet and goggles. 'Tve been demolition derbying for IS years and I havent seen anyone get (aeriously) hurt yet" Derby rules require an eight-inch hole be cut in the engine hood so fires can be put out quickly. "I was disqualified once because my car caught on fire," Kasort says. "I had an inexperienced pitman working along with me one year," he says. He told the pitman to anchor the battery down in the passenger side footwell where it is more protected. "He'd never done a demolition derby before. He didn't know what I meant by an choring the battery down." One of the cables was cut shorting the battery. The dashboard and floor quickly caught on fire. Kazort was out the window in sccond^- "A lot of little things can cost you a race," he says. The moat common failures are caused by overheated engines, transmission failure, or plain and simple abuse.
