The 1960s version is different: A young girl follows the yellow brick road from Kokomo to Stardom. The Dorothy of the '80s is of course, Sylvia, and hers is s story dreams are made of. At 24, Sylvia has launched a singing career that ranks high on the charts. Leav ing Kokomo, Ind., after high school, Sylvia knew exactly what she wanted and how she was going to get it She knocked on doors and eventually landed a part-time secretarial job with record producer Tom Collins. At night she began doing demo sessions to perfect the craft she had chosen for herself. Although coining in second in an audition for a "Sugar" replacement for Dave and McHENRY COUNTY WEIL & PUMP CO. Producer Collins soot a demo to RCA, at their request, and the rest is history. Her first RCA single, "You Don't Miss a Thing," 1979, readied the top forty. She began touring with Charley Pride and the chart-busting singles like "Tumbleweed," and "Drifter" kept coining. Her current single, "Nobody," follows suit in what Sylvia like to define as "Modern Western" music. Besides touring with the likes of Bobby Bare, Bill Anderson and the Oak Ridge Boys, Sylvia has been in demand on televi sion as well as having appreared on the "Barbara MandreU Show," "Hee Haw," "John Davidson," "Merv Griffin," "The Johnny Cash Special," "The Dean Martin Special" "Pop Goes the Country" and "SolidGold," to name a few. Perhaps speaking loudest of Sylvia's ac ceptance is her imnlnattffli as top female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music. Sharing the nomination with Barbara Man- drell, EmmyLou Harris, Rosanne Cash and Lacy J. Dalton is quite an honor for the once shy singer. The summer of tat will feature Sylvia at more than 90 dates including the McHenry County Fair, where she will perform in front of the grandstand atf:90 and 1:90 pjn. Saturday. Her delightful of energy and personality will keep her hi de mand and at the top of the charts for a long time to come. Sylvia may just be the key to putting "Superstar" back into the vocabulary of eountey music! , • W ' " 51 $ S i4 WE STOCK MOST PARTS FOR: • G.K. • MAYTAG • KITCHEN AID • WESTINGHOUSE • HOOVER • LITTON AND MANY FOR: , :A • ' 1241 N.
