To 4-H'er, county fair peak of yearlong effort By Sharon Ainger Special to Shaw Media Group HEBRON -- Fair time. The climax of the 4-H year! It's the time of year 4-H'ers of McHenry County look forward to. It's the time when members exhibit projects, show animals, and put new skills and knowledge to practical use. To 4-H'ers, the fair isn't just five days of good times. Members put a lot of work into their projects, whether it's all year feeding and caring for their sheep, all day sewing and altering a drees, or all night baking that perfect chocolate chip cookie. Fair time is when all that hard work means something; it's when members are judged to the best of their own individual abilities and are awarded accordingly. But the fair is more than work. It's a time to get together with old friends and to meet new ones. There are chances to win ribbons and trophies for projects, and -- for a few lucky members--a chance to go to the state fair. And if they need something else to do, there's always the Midway to explore and enjoy. The experiences 4-H'ers have in ex hibiting at the fair are helpful to them when the fair is over. Most of all, they learn to do the bast that they can do, and fair time is when they show the beat. Right now, the more than MOO 4-H members of McHenry County are preparing for the fair. For some, the fair will bring a little disappointment and for others the thrill of a blue ribbon. They will try their beet, and that's what the 4-H Fair is all After the fair is over, 4-H'ers dont sit around and wait for the next one. A new 4-H year begins every Septembei, and 4-H'ers choose new projects and elect new officers to lead their As the year goes on, there are opportunities to go to ramps, workshops, state conference, and Washington, D.C. They can participate in county contests, regional judging and club activities. Bat when It's summer again, If s time to get ready for the fair. i What's the fair like? Here's a look from the viewpoint of an experienced partici pant and outstanding 4-H member. Sharon Ainger, 18. a nine-year member, plans to major in journalism at Northern IIHnoia University. She graduated from Alden- Hebron High School in June aa Valedictorian. She has seven non-livestock pro jects in addition to four dairy animals and three pigs -- they occupy much of her time, although she helps around the farm and works part time at the Dairy Ripple at Walworth. Yes. she was also a dairy princess candidate this summer, too! The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ainger, Sharon says "meeting people and the anticipation of participation" make the fair outstanding every year.
