More than $3,000 worth of commercial space was sold that first year. Sixteen- hundred attended the Miss McHenry County Pageant at the new grandstands. Con struction started July 6 and was completed only a few days before the fair. Beth recalls that initial contest vividly because on the final afternoon he was in volved in constructing the first stage. Skipp ing meals and working in the hot sun proved too much ... he passed out from heat, but recuperated in time for the contest. "I didnt go home to change clothes -- no time -- but was there for the finals as the photos show me in work clothes," be says. The contest grew to today's affair. The se cond year was easier, Harold agrees. He headed it three years. Then the 441 queen reigned before the Miss McHenry County Pageant resumed in 1904 with A.B. McCon- nell as contest chairman. Beth's contribution to the fair extends far beyond the contest. He's been actively in volved in the fair each and every year since 1MB. Perhaps only two other people have been as dottly involved each and every He helped with gate receipt collection and counting each year. The list is a litany of leading banking personalities, such as Don Still, Harold Bacon, Tom Bolger, Floyd Foes, Warner Miller and Bob Kramer. When the Grange volunteered, he still had to count and deposit the receipts. "I spent some muddy days at the fairgrounds," he says. Beth served as fair treasurer for several years, though his Beth sees the fair as a "great thing" and an incentive for youngsters. The competi tion provides an incentive and a chance to see how a person's efforts stack up against other people. "The county fair is attractive as a good social outing," he adds. "Exhibits provide a diversifying way to learn. A great many people are involved, both to set up the com mercial exhibits and in the 4-H and Open "With 100,000 or more people coming eac# year, you know the fair is a wholesome at traction for a great many people.
