COUNCIL OF FIFTY-EIGHT Little did people know, fifty years ago, that a group of seed growers, professors and managers of public gardens were getting together in that year of 1932 to form a company that would change the future of home gar dening These experts in flowers and vegetables were frustrated at the 120 ,g(COUPON TS « I ptrip. Seed companies and u n i v e r s i t i e s w e r e reluctant to invest in p l a n t b r e e d i n g programs because home gardeners were not aware of the ad vantages of planting modern varieties. So. fifty years ago these experts organized All America Selections. The first year they had only a dozen judges. Now. a Council of 58 judges choose the best new varieties of flowers and vegetables for home garden use. Plant breeders now have more incentive to im prove home garden varieties. So, when you see the red, white and blue shield on packets, catalogs and plant labels, you can be sure that new variety is the best in its class FOOT FACTS: NAIL problems Courtesy Of N. Please note that the regular board meeting will begin an hour earlier, at 7 p.m. As soon as their business is completed the neigh borhood crime watch will continue for the evening There were 80 concerned citizens at last week's meeting and I'm sure they will be there again tomorrow. An expert in setting up a neighborhood crime watch will be there to help. The states attorney's office has informed us that with 90 percent community involvement our crime fate will decrease by 90 percent. It's up to all of us to work together to make our homes and neighborhood safe Please plan to attend this very important meeting. HELPSPOWS Irene Rihnke is a very concerned lady about our POW-MIA's remaining in Indochina She heard Rick Rosenthal from WGN radio was going to Washington to visit the Preeident's National Security Advisor so she set outtjto get signatures representing Mcflenry residents. She went out to beat a deadline and got 277 signatures, then delivered them personally to Rick Rosenthal Irene had one of the single biggest lists o# names, thanks to all the fine people in McHenry. All her hard work was worth it because the Reagan administration is proceeding on the assumption that there are American prisoners still in Indochina. WINS THE PRIZE If I gave awards for the most in teresting calls with requests that I receive, last week's call from Tyler, Tex., would get it. The man on the other end of the line said he wasn't sure how to go about asking me what he needed so he just jumped right in. It seems a lady who moved out of Lakeland Park in 1970 had inherited some money and she couldn't be found. We spent quite some time on the phone, him aaking all kinds of questions and me making suggestions on where to look. I had agreed to run the story hoping someone would read it and know where our missing person was By 10 o'clock that night another call came in from this man who was now very excited. It seems we put him on the right track and our lady was found. Can you imagine how she felt when her call came from Tyler? Lucky Lady!
