It's the same with cana-cnllectors only want thealuminumones, but won't have anything to do with the steel cans. Before the govern ment tot involved with gs clean up our backyards, no one was interested in my trash; now I can't produce it fast enough to keep everyone happy. Though the "paper market" is down right now and it's hard to give away old newsprint, aluminum cans are selling lor anywhere from 16 cents to 18 cents a pound in my area currently. Most soda cane and quite a few beer cans are all- aluminum now. Local civic groups, church organizations, the Boy Scouts (to name a few groups) usually have a spring or fall paper-can drive. The money helps support their community ac- tivitiee. But like most groupe, they've had to cut their expenses and trim their overhead. Now, rather than coming to my house (as the local Scout troop used to do) they ask that you bring your recycleables to a cen tral collection point. Juat last week I received a m ROUT 3 BEDROOM HOUSE, newly carpeted- decorated. McHenry School District, $450.00. Available immediately, no pets. 312-526-8306 8- U-0-20C 1 thanking me for my peat » with their drives, even though the current paper marfeet ie in a "recessive mode" they would still ap preciate my busineea aa the next paper drive la coming up in Sep tember. Thia aroused my curioeity: I couldn't figure out why they still wanted my papers when they're not even worth the effort to throw away. So I called the local scoutmaater and he told me that his troop makes "paper logs" for theektariy who still live in their own homes and have either wood or coal fed fumacee. He told me how the Scouta make the logs. Putting one together is pretty easy If you'd like to try your hand at it. You'll want to keep the newspaper wet by soaking it in a bucket of water (wearing gloves helps to keep the ink off your hands).. Spread out all the papers into single sheets on the floor. The object is to roll the sheets into the tightest round log that you can. Some people wrap the first sheet around a dowel or broom handle to get started. Others Just fold the newspaper pages over each other and, after they've done this v with about five pages, they start rolling Whatever "style" suits you beet, you'll wsnt to end up with a round log about four or five inches in diameter. After rolling it to this thickness, tie string or twine around the log to keep it from unraveling. Give it about a week and a half to dry out. Then when the nighta get chilly put two or three in the stove and they'll burn all evening long. / I can •tut* SERVICE PAGE ll - PLAINDEALER • FRIDAY, AUGUST 13,1002 | Postal Support For A Id To Aged » * * JL Electrician's Mate Course Ends Navy Electrician's Mate 3rd Claaa Gregory J.
