PAGE • - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, IMS Joe Dehn and Gary Gilpin, the two "new guys" on the Fox Hole Tap 1962 roster, teamed up in an aweaome display of offensive and defensive prowess to help the Tap sweep Monday's doubleheader playoff games against the Rusty Nail Inn. The ex-Old Bridge stars combined for 13 hits (including three homeruns by Gilpin), 16 RBI's, nine runs scored and three great defensive plays at third base by Gilpin. The victories helped propel the Fox Hole to a two game to none advantage in the best of five championship series. The Rusty Nail Inn struck first and last in game one, but in between it was all Fox Hole Tap. After Kevin Freund's first inning single gave the Nail a brief one-run lead, Gary Gilpin punched a two-run sungle to put the Tap in the lead for good. Gilpin later scored on Mike Peterson's base hit. Joe Dehn's two run single, followed by Gary Gilpin's two-run homer, put the Fox Hole up 7-1 in the second in ning. The Nai! scored twice in the fifth on RBI singles by Dave Freund and Chuck Marke, but 7-3 was the closest the Rusty Nail could get. In the sixth, RBI singles by Jim Yaworski and Joe Dehn, coupled with a Nail error, helped the Tap to three more runs. Jim Zasada's RBI hit gave the Nail their final run in the seventh frame as Fox Hole Tap breezed to an easy 10-4 victory. Joe Dehn paced the winners going 4- for-4. Ron Miller added another perfect game at the plate going 3-for-3 and Twig Miller added three hits. However, Gary Gilpin sent a three- run skyrocket into the left field bleachers to put the Tap up by a 22-5 margin. Larry Jones tripled in a Nail run in the sixth and scored on Ron Lentine's ground out to short. But the Fox Hole offense never sputtered as they came back with three more runs in the final inning. Mike Peterson's two-run, inside-the- park homer, along with Carl Moesche's RBI groundout added up to 25 runs. Rick Wakitsch's two-rur^ homerun in the bottom half of the seventh gave the Nail their total in the 25-9 rout. Twig Miller had four hits and Rich Meyers had three to help the Fox Hole. Jim Yaworski and Jeff Meyers added perfect 2-for-2 performances. Jim Zaaada had three hits for the Rusty Nail. The Fox Hole out-hit the Nail 29-12 in game two, 194 in game one. Joe Dehn hit safely four times in five at-hits, giving him 10 straight hits in the playoffs with a .765 average (13 for 17) so far. The first 14 batters to the plate in the Tap accounted for 12 hits, one walk and one sacrifice fly. Joe Dehn doubled and singled with an RBI during his two at-bats during the onslaught. Mike Peterson and Jim Yaworski added two-run singles. Gary Gilpin, Rich Meyers, Twig Miller and Bill Meyers had RBI base hits. Keving Freund and Al Stilling knocked in solo runs for the Rusty Nail in their half of the first inning. However, it wasn't their night as the Fox Hole went on to score in every inning. An error, plus RBI singles by Twig Miller and Joe Dehn, put three runs on the scoreboard in the Tap second. Vinnie Freund singled in another run during the Fox Hole third inning. In the fourth, Gary Gilpin's two-run opposite field homerun, after a run had already scored on a fielder's choice, gave the Fox Hole an 18-2 lead. An inning later, Vinnie Freund's sacrifice fly put the Fox Hole on top by 19 runs. Chuck Marke, Rick Wakitsch and Kevin Bauer knocked in one run each during a three-run Nail fifth. Leaden skies and moisture-laden air apparently acted as no deterrent to respectable golf being played by the ladies at McHenry Country club as they shot the first of two rounds of Senior Ladies Championship. Since some of the women qualify as seniors and others do not, at this writing no line-up of leaders is forthcoming - final results will be made known next week. -^Low gross over the field was a fine 90 shot by Nell Fidler to give her low net of 69 in Class A. In the same class Carolyn Harger and Letty Busscher tied for low putts of 29 each. Steady Mabel Smith grossed 106 for a net 75 in Class B while Gladys Warfield low putted with 27 roll-ins in the same class In Class C Gloria Spiess low grossed with 112 while Ursula Cisliek and Jackie Victor tied for low net with 72 each. In the same class Jean Napier low putted with 29. Shooting her beat game to date our fraulein, Lotte Koch, grossed 117 for low gross in Class D as well as low net of 70. Nice going, Lotte. In the same class low putts of 30 were rolled in by Speedy Neuman. While Carole Barnicle was pruning lots of trees and Char Zwissier was raking many of the traps some of the' gals were recording chip-ins and birdiea. Joanie Buss started the day right by birdieing the first hole. Then, non-senior Kathv Greer and Senior Alvina Yopp birdied No. 4. The other birdie registered was by Nell Fidler on No. 15. Kathy also chipped in on No. 6 while Dee Overton took a no-putt on No. 11 to hold par; Betty Smith chipped in oh No. 13 and Gladys Warfield dittoed on Nos. 3 and 18 • such a good way to keep the scores down. Gallant Lady of Th6 Day award has to be given to Barb Weber who, in spite of many troubles with many out- of-bounds, maintained her composure and continued to comport herself like the lady she is. A report from the Nifty Niners shows that there was a four-day tie between Dorothy Flynn, Peg An derson, Jean Nigbor and Bea Pond for their Mutt and Jeff Tournament. A chip-in by Peg Anderson on No. 15 gave her low putts of 15, followed by Marge Adams with 16 putts. They came from the south, they came from the east, they came from the west, but the team from the north came and walked over the rest. After a very successful season in their own (the northern) division the McHenry ladies travelling team sashayed over to Orchard Hills in Waukegan last Friday for the division play-off of the Intersuburban League. Competing against Big Run (south), Sunset Valley (east) and Village LinkSv (west) the McHenry gals won handily with a four point lead. Contributing to the fine win were Alvina Yopp with an 86. Nell Fidler with 89, Floas O'Con- nell, Virginia Turner, Letty Busscher and Dee Overton. The elation of being the winners surely made for Happy Golflag! Liz The Whale's Tail, with superb defense, finished first in the Class D tournament held last weekend at Hooker Lake Inn in Wisconsin. The tournament victory enables the Tail to compete in the state tournament to be held over Labor Day weekend. Both tournaments are under sanction of the United Amateur Softball League (UASL). The Whale's Tail finished the weekend with five victories. The Tail opened the tourney on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Ralph's Corner Tap out of Kenosha. Ralph's held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh when the Tail made its rally. Fred Stocker led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the right field line. He scared seconds later on a single by Mark Vogt With Vogt taking second on the throw. Frank Schmidt was intentionally paaaed and Steve Mai followed with a fly ball to right with Vogt taking third. With runners on first and third and one out, Ralph's elected to pitch to Jim Gray. Gray promptly hit a 280- foot blast off the left field fence to give the Tail its initial win. Poor baserunning by Ralph's and great defense by the Tail helped all day as the Tail turned five double plays. A great catch by second baseman Mark Niggeman and his relay home doubled up one runner and two runners were thrown out at third by right fielder John Sytsma. Tom Nusbaum had a shoestring catch in left center to avert another rally and Randy Rodiek and Mai checked the middle of the diamond with two double plays Game two was much easier for the Tail as they defeated Robinaon Citgo of Zion 10-3. The winners scored four times in the first, added two more in the second and were never headed. Defense again sparkled as Mai turned two rouble plays and Stocker threw out a runner at secdnd base. Citgo is currently in first place in their league with a 20-2 record and already qualified for a state berth. Five dif ferent Tail players had two hits each to pace the offense. In game three, the Tail defeated MeCannkk'a (Lake Foreat) by a 7-1 verdict. The Tail scored three times in the first highlighted by Frank Sch midt's two-run triple. Nusbaum went 4-for-4 to lead the offense while Vogt, Schmidt, Sytsma, and Don Olson had two hit? each. Two bases loaded rallies by Mc- Cormick's were shut down by the Tail defense. In the third, Sytsma caught a fly ball in right and gunned down a runner at the plate, and in the seventh Nusbaum made an over-the-shoulder catch in deep left center to end the game In the finals of the winners bracket, the Tail faced the Alloys from Hanover Park.\The Tail squeaked out a 5-4 win to make the finals of the tournament. The Alloys took an early 2-0 lead but the Tail scored two runs in the third to tie the game. The Tall then took the lead for good in the fifth with a three-run outburst. Stocker led the Tail offense with a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI's. Olson, Gray, and Sytsma had two hita each to aid the cause. The Tail met the Alloys again as the Alloys won the loser's bracket title. The team from Hanover Park needed to defeat the Tail twice to win the championship, but the Tail won 4-2 to capture the tournament cham pionship. The Tail scored one in the first, two in the third, and added an inaurance run in the seventh to take the title. Stocker and Schmidt had two hits with Stocker adding two runs scored and Schmidt two RBI's. In the tournament, defense was the name of the game as the Tail turned 12 double plays in five gamea and held their opponents to a total of 11 rune. The offense was paced by Nusbaum (9 hits), Stocker (8nitaand8 RBI's), and Vogt (.500 ave). With pitcher Rodiek and shortstqp Mai plugging up the middle and the outfield not com mitting a single error, the Tail came away with the championship and a berth next weekend.
