r t Fox Hole Takes 12-Inch PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 1,1982 The Fox Hole Tap ended any doubts asito who is the best in McHenry 12- •> inch play. The "Big Red Machkfe\ scored six runs to break an 8-8 tie in1 the sixth inning to win the third and deciding contest in the Men's 12-inch ^cnampipnship playoff series. The~/inal score was Fox Hole-14, Rusty Nail-8 as the Tap won their third consecutive title. A major factor in the Fox Hole sweep was second baseman, Joe* Dehn. Dehn went 4-for-4 in game 3, giving him an incredible 12-for-13 in the Nail series, plus an overall 18-for- 21 (.810). His hitting prowess earned him the tournament Most Valuable Player award. However, Dehn was not the only ace up manager Twig Miller's sleeve as the "Big Red Machine" combined for a sparkling .575 team batting average. P4ayers like Ron Miller, 10-for-13 (.769); Rich Meyers, 12-for-18 (.667); and Steve Dobner, 9-for-15 (.600); helped account for the high average. Defensively, Gary Gilpin, at third, Ron Miller, at short, Joe Dehn, at second and Bill Meyers, on the mound, shut down the Rusty Nail offense with great stops of ground smashes and numerous snares of line shots. Hie third and deciding glme of the Championship series saw the Rusty Nail Inn score two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Doug Freund led off with a double, ad vanced to third on a fly-out and scored on Chuck Marke's ground-out to short: Rick Wakitsch followed with a solo blast over the left field fence -- his second homerun in the playoffs. Joe Dehn doubled after two were out and scored on Bill Meyers's base hit t9 put the Tap on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. After the Nail went three-up, three- down in the second, the Fox Hole took their first lead of the contest with a three-run second inning. Three straight singles by Steve Dobner, Rich Meyers and Mike Peterson tied the score at two. Later, Ron Miller drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Twig Miller added an RBI to put the Tap up 4^2. Doug Freund and Jim \Zasada scored the tying runs for the Rusty Nail during a two-run third inning. Freund scored on a Wakitsch sacrifice fly and "Zot" followed Freund on a bad throw to the plate on the same play. Neither team really came close to scoring during the next inning-and-a- half, but in the top of the fifth, the Rusty Nail took a 5-4 lead. Doug Kigund's leadoff single plus Chuck Marke's triple scored the run. An intentional pass to Rick Wakitsch led to an inning ending double-play as Kevin Freund hit into the short-second-first play, leaving Marke stranded. The Fox Hole roared back with their next seven batters garnering six hits as the Tap took an "8-5 lead. Ron Miller's lead-off single started the four-run fifth inning. Jim Yaworski, Joe Dehn, Bill Meyers, Gary Gilpin and Steve Dobner followed Miller's hit with their own safeties. Dehn and Meyers drove in one run each, while Gary Gilpirt knocked in two of his game leading three RBIs with a bases-loaded The bottom oF> he Nail line-up rallied to tie the scoi ^»t 8 in the top of £ the sixth inning. Larry Jones tripled and scored on Ray Thelen's second straight hit. Dave Sundby and Doug Freund added singles to load the bases. Jim Zasada drove in two runs with a single. But, the "Big Red" rose to the oc casion as Vinnie Freund and Ron Miller hit back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a fly-out, Jeff Meyers batted his only time in the game and punched a game-winning hit to score Fruend. The Fox Hole was not through as Joe Dehn doubled in one run, Bill Meyers singled in two more, which were followed by one RBI each from Rich Meyers and Mike Peterson. The six-run outburst was too much .for the Nail as they went three-up, three-down in the top of the seventh to end the contest, the series and the 1982 season. The Fox Hole completed the overall 1982 season with a 19-3 record. That gives the Tap a 58-6 record in three years of 12-inch competition. Their only loss in post-season play was the 48-27 homerun derby won by Wayne's in the first game of the 1981 playoffs. «a TRIVIA-The answer to the last trivia question, "How many players are rumored to be going to new teams?" will be given at the First Annual McHenry 12-inch Awards Night and Dance at the Johnsburg Community Club.
