PAGE 6 • PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 8,1982 Gridiron Play To Start This Friday The spotlight of fall high school sports has always shone on varsity football and 1982 should prove to be no different. In the McHenry area, head coaches Joe Schlender, at McHenry High School; Randy Oberembt, at Johnsburg; and Don Penza, at Marian Central have been very busy these past few weeks, preparing for the upcoming season, which starts this weekend for all three schools. In his fourth year at the helm of the McHenry varsity squad, Schlender faces the upcoming season with the biggest squad, physically, he has ever had. ' --' An off-season weight training program has helped the Warrior team in this regard; boosting the weight and strength of the players. McHenry will open the season Friday night (Parent's night), Sept. 10, against Stevenson, in one of two non-conference games. What follows are seven straight Fox Vailley Conference (FVC) games. In his first year as head coach of the Skyhawk's, Randy • Oberembt is taking over where Bob Schmitt left off. However, Oberembt faces seven new conference opponents having left the Shark Conference for the Northwest Suburban Conference (NWSC). The Skyhawks open Saturday, Sept. 11, at home against the Richmond- Burton Rockets in a non-conference bout. In the first pairing of the golf season, the Hurricanes fell 205-164 to the Cary Grove Trojans at Cary Country Club, on Sept. 2. Three Hurricane linksters -- Sam Anthony, Steve Huemann and Terry Reckamp -- all carded scores of 50 in the nine-hole outing. The Trojan junior varsity team also downed the Hurricane opposition, 178- 223. Joe Callahan came in with a 52 to mark the lowest score of 4he Hurricance junior varsity golfers. At Marengo Ridge on Sept. 2, Marian came in 14 strokes behind the Marengo varsity golf squad, 201-187. Leading the Hurricanes, Anthony shot a 45, five strokes better than his game against Cary. Reckamp carded 51, Tom Morris came in with 52 and Gregg Mason finished the nine with a 53. In junior varsity competition, Callahan again led the Hurricanes with a low score of 53i, but it was not good enough to take the Marengo squad. Marengo beat Marian Central by 20 strokes, 232-212. In the third outing, against Crown at Randall Oaks, two Marian varsity golfers made noticeable improvement, but could not get the help to beat the Vikings. Crown dropped the Hurricanes to 0-3 for the season so far by winning 164-193. Sam Anthony set the pace for the Hurricanes, marking a 39 at the away game. He was followed by Steve Huemann, who came in at 48. Tom Morris and Gregg Mason finished the nine-hole competition with scores of 50 and 56, respectively. The junior varsity golf squad fell to the Crown Vikings by a score of 227- 191. Jeff Madsen brought in a- low score of 50. In his first year as head coach of the Hurricane golf team, Jim Speaker pointed out that in two of the three matches, a freshman linkster, Steve Huemann, was in the low four -- the only scores that count in high school golf competition. "Huemann shows some real promise," Speaker said. Other than Huemann, who is a freshman this year, the rest of the squad are juniors, except for two seniors, Sam Anthony and Tom Morris. Speaker said all of the Hurricane vdjreity golfers are experienced and just need to settle down and get their games together. , Anthony is expected to lead the Hurricanes throughout the 1982 golf season. Speaker is a third-year teacher at Marian Central Catholic high school. Following the game against Marmion, at Marmion, the Hurricanes will have their first home game when they host the Montini Broncos on Monday, Sept. 13. Anthony Oliver McHenry Harriers Take 7th Place In Maine West Invitational Meet Hurricane Fury Sweeps In Volleyball po high school volleyball teams, each sporting new head coaches and at least four returning lettermen, faced off in a non-conference opener last Thursday night at Marian Central Catholic'High School. The 1982 season opened in a rather disappointing fashion for the Johnsburg Skyhawks as they suffered two blows at the hands of the Marian Central Hurricanes. The Skyhawks were swept away in a 15-6 first game loss and then mauled in a 15-5 match against the Hurricane girls. Marian Central played a smooth and consistent game throughout the course of the evening, managing to override Skyhawk rushes lata- in the games. It has been noted that the Skyhawks started out much the same last year -- a little slow at first -- but shaking off the butterflies and putting together a very competitive team. Anchoring the Johnsburg attack are four returning lettermen from last year's state finalist team. Seniors, Megan Hall, Lori Nichols and Jane Pecucci and junior, Theresa Hauck have returned to the Skyhawk lineup as veteran starters. Last year's junior varsity volleyball coach, Sharal Koenigseder, has taken over the top position of the varsity Skyhawks. Likewise at Marian Central Catholic High School, the Hurricane newcomers are bolstered by five veteran starters, Sarah Traver, Holly Ryan, Chris Ferrero, Kim Schuler and Beth Penza. Taking the helm of the Hurricane varsity volleyball squad is Linda Hoppman, in her first year as head coach. The Skyhawks have three contests this week, two of which are conference games. On Tuesday, Sept. 7,' the Skyhawks will host the Round Lake Panthers in their first conference game. On Thursday, Sept. 9, Johnsburg travels to take on the Grayslake Rams in another conference match. The Skyhawks will face Harvard, in Johnsburg, on Friday, Sept. 10. Marian Central is on the road for two days, meeting Rosary on Wednesday, Sept. 8, and Crown, on Thursday, Sept. 9. Neither is a conference game. Coach Bill Hutchinson's McHenry Warrior cross-country team opened their season with a 7th-place finish in the Maine West Invitationaf held last Saturday. Due to a lack of numbers, the Warriors were not able to field a complete team in all four classes for , the boys and two classes for the girls. On the varsity level, returning letterman Steve Carby finished second with a time of 15:32. The sixth runner to cross the finish line was sophomore Chris Creutz, who is also a returning letterman from last year's team, which took third in the state. Creutz finished with a time of 15:43. He was followed by Brian Wright, in 39th place; Marty Koleno, 46th; and Jim Wynveen, 87th. The junior-varsity squad had Bob Sarabia finishing 11th and Todd Rhode coming in 46th. Sophomores Tim Pankiewicz and Ray Lance finished 16th and 75th, respectively. Running at the frosh-soph level, freshman Terry Harth was the first across the line with a time of 12:12. Steve Henshall followed in 38th place and Chris Mumma in 48th. The top Warrior harrier on the girl's varsity team was Delia Saunders, who crossed the line in the 14th position with a time of 14:16, while Kelly Brough came in 55th. In the frosh-soph race, Pam Bradley, a returning letterman, finished 7th with a time of 8:47. Michele Paul was 35th, Tiffany and Ray Lance; and? freshman harriers Terry Harth, Chris Mumma, Mark Grim, and Steve Henshall.
