r Dundee Downs Skyhawks Join$ EIU DUNDEE--The opening meet of the Johnsburg Sky hawk cross-country team ended in a 20-40 defeat at the hands of the Dundee Cardunals last Thursday. Skyhawk harrier Jay Jackson was the first to break the tape at the finish line, marking a time of 16:24 for the 3.1-mile course. Cardunal runners supplied the second through seventh firashersfN. Mike Lawrence, Jeff Nichols and Mike Dodge came in eighth, ninth and Umth, respectively. In the finishing line-up, the 16th and 17th places went to Ken Schoenig and Steve Schmitt. Jackson said he was not too impressed with the 1R?4 Hooking, but feels it is still early in the season. He said he has confidence that his rigorous training last summer will pay off in future meets. Coach Bob Texidor is working a smaller squad this year but he feels his runners nave the right attitude and motivation to be very competitive against other schools, in and out of the Northwest Suburban conference. - The Skyhawk cross-country team will travel to Grant, Thursday, Sept. 9, to race against the Bulldogs. On Saturday, Sept. 11, the Skyhawk harriers will compete in the Crystal Lake Invitational, at Crystal Lake. CHARLESTON--Joining the Panther harriers at Eastern Illinois University is freshman Gordon Bourev, former cross-country runner for the McHenry High School ore. urey graduated from McHenry year and is expected to do well this cross-country season at Eastern. Annual Antiques Appraisal Day Scheduled At Museum ltry r b: team y Neil! The Eastern cross-coun will be coached this year Moore, former track coach at Eastern. Moore succeeds the post vacated by Tom Woodall. Plans have been finalized for a second annual Antiques Appraisal day at the McHenry County Historical museum in Union Sunday, Sept. 19, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. This year as with last, Connie Blanchette, a registered appraiser for over 22 years, will do the verbal ap­ praisals and speak about those items being appraised. A member of Mid- America Antique Appraisers association, American Cut Glass association and the Richmond Mer­ chants association, Mrs. Blanchette has had a long involvement with the world of antiques. She has been on TV and radio programs discussing an­ tiques with listeners and is widely known in the area as an antiques lecturer, judge, and teacher. f LAllNDfcALKR - WEDNESDAY. Spectator Rules Issued . / The McHenry High School administration has decided to continue the spectator policy adopted last fall and will be enforced at the first home football game, against Stevenson, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 10. A The policy will be in effect for all other athletic events, according to the administration. --Youngsters under high school age will not be admitted to the sports event unless .accompanied by a MCHS Golfers Win McHENRY--The McHenry High School golf team opened the season with a 152-178 victory over the Antioch Sequoits at McHenry Country Club Sept. 2. Coached by Chuck Cuda, the Warriors were led by Tom Neumann, who shot an even-par 35 for the nine- hole match. Kirk Barnicle, Steve Swec and Ken Lansu each carded scores of 39 for the day. On Tuesday, Sept; 7, the Warriors will ho6t Grant and Prospect at McHenry Country Club. Reducing The Hazards The risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals from accidents involving trans­ port trucks or train derail­ ments will continue to grow with tlifc volume of danger­ ous chemicals being trans­ ported across the nation. A specialist who trains emer­ gency response teams says more than 13,000 hazardous chemical spills were reported during the last year for which figures are available. CONSUMER ^CHECKLIST COAST GUARD COMPETITION The United States Coast Guard academy has announced that it is now accepting and processing applications fo^ appointment as cadet, U.S. Coast Guard, Class of 1987. Applications are being accepted from both men and women. Appointments as Coast Guard cadets are tendered solely on the basis of an annual nationwide competition with no congressional appointments or geographical quotas. Applications for appointment must be submitted to the Director of Admissions, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, prior to Dec. 15. Birr received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineer ing f rom Northwestern Illinois university. In his present position as energy planner, his job includes their energy audit program, grant management and communi ty energy education.
