f LAKELAND PARK & LAKELAND SHORES Carol Conrrinsky 085-7246 A Keep Children Away From Berms One of the men working the berms at the West Beach called and asked for my help in keeping the kids away from the construction site. A fence was put all around the area and no trespassing signs are posted but the children still insist upon playing there. The workers and police have chased the culprits away but they come right back. This site is a very dangerous place to be now so if you know any kids using it for a playground please remind them to stay away. DAY CHANGE The Lakeland Park Property Owners association has changed its monthly meeting from the first Thursday of the month to the first Wednesday. I'm sorry for the con fusion for the September meeting because I was not informed of the change in time to print it. OFFICERS ELECTED The Lakeland Park Refunders club held its election of officers at the meeting Sept. 8. President is Carol Cominsky, 385-7246; vice president, Bobttie Thomason, 385-2149; secretary, Lin Dentro, 385-5936; and treasurer, Carolyn Lachel, 344-4864. All members agreed that we should help FISH by donating free food items and money refunds that are left over each month. The community can also participate by saving their brand name boxes and labels for us. If you would save your refundable trash for us we will make arrangements to pick it up. You can call any officer and they will get it from you before our meeting each month. ON SICK LIST Carl and Carol Smith's young son Sean was a sick little boy and had to spend a few days in McHenry hospital. Most children heal quickly and we hope that's true for Sean. BIKE RIDERS Ever since the new wider Meadow lane reopened many kids are using it for a bicycle path. Most drivers using the road are finding it to be an ob stacle course trying to avoid hitting a child on a bike. I do hope you remind your children to obey the bicycle safety rules when they go out. Planning to gather with them on Saturday, Sept. 11, to celebrate this beautiful occasion, were their three sons, Bob, Don and Steve, and their families. Agnes and Clarence are proud and fortunate to be blessed with seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Having been residents of McHenry Shores for over 24 years, many of our other long time residents will remember the many years, hours and hard work both Clarence and Agnes have devoted to the village. , What a nice chat I had with Agnes last week on the phone, and we join in wishing both her and Clarence much joy in the years ahead to them and their family. May God bless them and watch over them. GET WELL WISHES ' Our hope for a speedy recovery goes to Benny Pagusa, who at this writing is recovering at McHenry hospital, due to an accident at home last week. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15.1962 Ask Reduction Of Truck Inspections Secretary of State Jim Edgar has proposed a four-part program that includes elimination of one of two annual safety inspections and creation of multi-year, vanity and handicapped plates for the state's 828,000 registered pickup trucks. Edgar's pickup truck program would: 1) Reduce from two to one the number of inspections for trucks with "B" plates, saving vehicle owners time and inspection fees; (for all larger trucks, the semi-annual requirement would remain intact); 2) Establish vanity plates for trucks as is currently done for automobiles; 3) Issue handicapped plates for trucks and vans; 4) Waive fourth quarter fees for all new trucks registered after June 1 each year. Edgar said he will propose legislation next session to implement the program he announced. Fairbanks, Alaska, is the closest city in North America-, to^the Arctic Circle. Legal drugs have become a major problem in American society. Con sider these facts: An average of six prescriptions are filled each year for every man, woman and child in the U.S. The average doubles when prescription drugs given in hospitals are included. Some five billion tranquilizer capsules are prescribed each year. Says Dr. Jere E. Goyan, Com missioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), "We Americans are an over-medicated society,^ Patients expect a prescription every time they visit their doctors. Often they'd be better off without a drug, and they shouldn't insist on one." Goyan, a pharmacist, believes the over-medication problem includes non-prescription drugs as well. He offers this guidance: Don't expect a prescription every time you visit the doctor. There isn't a pill for every ill. Discuss with your doctor what the drug Is for and what side effects to look for. Do follow the doctor's instructions, and those accompanying drugs, when taking medications. If you have any questions, ask your doctor 6r pharmacist. Use your head before you swallow.
