Former Landfill Site * Due For Development An elephant's tusks may g»ow to a length of 11 feet and may weigh 200 or 235 pounds apiece. By Joanne Springman SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE A deal is in the works between Woodstock and the McHenry County Conservation district for development of the former landfill site on Davis road soyth of the city. \ The City Council has approved a concept put forth by MCCD officials, and action is expected within the next few weeks. According to MCCD Land Manager Don Schellhaass, the district plans to lease about 43 acres of the 71-acre site for development as a park and wildlife rehabilitation area. Twenty-three acres are occupied by Woodstock Sportsmen's club facilities, which spokesman Arlo Leibert of Woodstock said are open to the public as well. About five acres on the site are occupied by the city water treatment plant A Sometime ago, the Environmental Protection agency also gave its blessing for development at the site of the former landfill. Tentatively, Schellhaass said, MCCD and the city cooperatively will develop about 40 acres fo£ the public "Kishwaukee Park," to include a picnic grove, open space for recreation, nature trail and parking and sanitary facilities. MCCD Executive Director Ken Fiske said the district will do some plantings of species native to the site, but any ornamental planting projects Two one gr< 5-month females; ey tiger, 455-2637. one white, MISCELLANEOUS Guinea Pig, 2-month female, 455- 3932. In addition to discouraging the latter practice, general information would be disseminated about habitat changes and destruction and the place of wildlife in nature and society. Fiske explained that all wildlife officially belongs to the state and federal governments, and under the law, private citizens are not permitted to keep the animals for any reason. 'But if volunteers were trained at MCCD workshops, they could keep the wildlife for rehabilitation under the auspices of MCCD Other plans for the rehabilitation area include a building and outdoor enclosures. Schellhaass said the plan is for the city and MCCD to jointly maintain the newly-developed areas Fiske added that any development plans now or in the future would have to be by mutual agreement of the city and MCCD. If there are no snags in the deal, Schellhaass said some of the work could be done before winter setsin. "The city has long been interested in doing something With that land," FT§ke said "We think this will be a nice arrangement for both parties.v will have to be initiated by other organizations. Fiske said the site is "a good example of nature healing itself" because some native flora has been growing again since the close of the landfill. ^ Schellhaass said the firsr phase of the development probably will be the rehabilitation area for injured and abandoned wildlife. That develop ment will be undertaken by the MCCD alone, and the three-acre area will not be open to the public. Fiske said the MCCD needs a central location where injured and abandoned animals can be taken arid recuperate until they are ready to return toJhe wild. Currently, Fiske said, wildlife is collected at various places around the county and rehabilitated mostly in the homes and backyards of two MCCDy staffers who handle those chores. Sometimes the wildlife also As treated by veterinarians who volunteer their services. "What we need is a kind of intensive care unit for the wildlife," Fiske said, "a place where the public knows they can bring the animals and birds." Fiske said MCCD also would like to use the facility for educational pur poses like workshops to teach people how to treat wildlife. He said people should be educated to leave the The President who served the shortest time in office was W. H. Harrison, who only served one month, in 1841.
