On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbit The Warriors opent their football season tonight when they play hosts to the Stevenson Patriots, a new member of the North Suburban Conference. Coach Joe Schlender has been working the squad very hard during the pre-season in preparation for the opening game. One of the goals of the Warriors this season is to have a winning team, and five victories is the immediate goar of the coaching staff and the team. In the few workouts I observed, I was impressed with the spirit of the squad, the "no nonsense" attitude of the coaching staff ana the hard hitting during the contact sessions. A trademark of a Schlender coached team is CONDITION. This team is no exception. When the whistle blows for the fourth quarter, you can bet the Warriors will be raring to go. There may be a time when they are out played, but never a time when they were out-conditioned. It will be Parent's Night, when the parents of the varsity squad, along with the cheerleaders, will be honored before the varsity game. Coach Chuck Cuda's golf team has picked up a couple of impressive wins early in the season. They defeated Antioch, and Northwest Suburban Conferencejgpwer, last week. On Tuesday, they downed one of the state's best, Prospect High School. If they can continue this fine play, they may be taking a trip in late October to the state capital. Hutch's cross country team finished 7th in the Maine West Invitational last Saturday. This is the same finish they had last year and it started them on their way to a third place finish in the state finals. Tuesday they defeated both DeKalb and Sycamore. Pam Schaffer's volleyball team and Gary Gray's tennis team are both opening their seasons this week and Mike Shanahan's girls swimming team will wait until next week for their opener at Elgin Larkin. It is time for me to dust off the crystal ball and see what the season holds forth for this year. I like the Warriors in their opener against Stevenson. The Warriors are going to surprise some people this season. Central is going to take Antioch in a close one. Antioch is the team to beat in the Northwest and the Tigers are rated the top in the Fox Valley. Jacobs to win over Marengo, the Blue Streaks to beat Mundelein, South to beat Marian Central in another close game, Cary to nip Wauconda, Crown to run over Lake Zurich, Dundee the same over Grayslake and the Skyhawks to win their opener over Richmond. l-Wi m. < -<•* c. xkt ?< '• • i ft • \ • • m PAUfc, V - - f K1DA \ , at.** I m, Sports Roundup Softball McHenry Women's Tuesday night softball league will hold a meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Palace Bowl. Joe Callahan carded a 53 at Marengo Ridge for that squad Tennis The McHenry girls' tennis team lost its first meet of the season 6-3 to Beividere Tuesday. It was Belvidere's fourth meet of the season. "First match jitters played a big part in the defeat of the inexperienced Warrior squad," said McHenry coach, Gary Gray. Kris Sorling and Sarah Prust were the only Warriors to win in single matches. Sonja Anderson and Prust defeated their Buc opponents in doubles. The warriors next match will be against Antioch at West Campus at 4:30.
