McHenry township. r C7, UJLCS OoCJ FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 29,1932) The Plaindealer invites as its guest, Mrs. William Stoffel, McHenry, and one guest to witness the presentation of "Tom Brown of Culver", at the Empire theatre in McHenry. A meeting of the McHenry County Red Cross chapter under the chair manship of Thomas P. Bolger of McHenry met at Woodstock. The second carload of flour was received at Woodstock and has been distributed to the various county branches for relief work. Plans are being made for a Red Cross roll call in the county which will be made between Ar mistice day and Thanksgiving day. The management of the Empire theatre announces a treat to its patrons. They have been very for tunate to secure for the winter months, a stock company known as Billy and his company. Billy is well known in this community, having biro with the Rotnour Players for several years. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 24,1942) Gordon Berg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Berg of Ringwood, received his early training at Tacoma, Wash., with the 61st division provost guard and is now serving with troops in Australia. Oct. 6 is the last day for voters to register under the New Permanent Registration act. A total of 498 McHenry voters availed themselves of the chance to insure their voting next election. One hundred twenty- four registered in precinct one, 126 in precinct two, 194 in precinct three and 150 in precinct four. A total of 2,700 votere are expected to register in the township. Those named from draft board number one included Garfiteld Ben son, Harry Conway, Clarence J. Etten, Elmer Freund, Paul Huff, Fredrick Kent, Bernard Matchen, William Meyers, Victor Miller, Theodore Pitzen, Robert Bossman, Norbert Smith, Bernard Thurlwell and Glenn Wattles. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 26,1957) Miss Clara A. Miller of 194 N. Front street recently retired after spending a period of 37 years and 11 months with the Illinois Bell Telephone* company at the local exchange. Miss Miller started with seven operators, a number which has increased to 60 today. She is the first McHenry woman to serve continuously for so long a period. Her exceptionally pleasant voice has made her popular with the entire community and her many years of public service have not gone unappreciated. Ground breaking ceremonies took place for the new Zion Evangelical Lutheran church on Rt. 120 near the city. A newly reconditioned pipe organ will be dedicated at worship next Sunday morning at the Community Methodist church. Dr. Birger Dahl, district superintendent, will speak and take part in the dedication rite. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 27,1972) Three local juveniles were petitioned to juvenile court after they confessed to McHenry city police and East campus authorities that they had been involved in a smoke bomb in cident at East campus. Close cooperation between the police department and East campus officials led to the discovery that the two smoke bombs ignited on the A-level near the girls locker room were made by students. During the in vestigations, several offenses of shoplifting and theft were discovered. A fire in the Cox residence in Aqua Lane Estates, north of McHenry, resulted in damage Which may reach $10,000. , For the second time the McHenry Senior Citizens club is donating to the McHenry Rescue squad. This last donation is in the name of the club's president, ^Kenneth Fairchild, who died in June of this year. Gospel Group At Two Services Sunday morning, Sept. 19, at both the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. services, the exciting Gospel group, Isaiah :53, will be performing at Faith Presbyterian church. Isaiah :53 is well known throughout northern Illinois for their exciting presentation of con temporary Christian music. The group formed when Scott Persky and Bill Gartner, two mem bers of Faith church, felt a common vision and calling to serve God through the media of music. Other members of the church joined with them and gradually the ministry developed. -- »-- In the past year, Isaiah: 53 per formed over 45 concerts throughout Illinois. The community is invited to hear the group this Sunday. In ad dition, Sunday morning will conclude a Spiritual Renewal weekend featuring the Rev. Allen Timm of Behlehem, Pa. The Rev. Timm is nationally known for his work in church renewal and he will be preaching at both services. Visitors are always welcome at the church. Faith church is located at the intersection of Lincoln and Chapel Hill roads, across from the outdoor theater. PLAN LEAGUE COOKOUT-The Junior Luther league at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, has planned a cook out and fellowship time for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Moraine Hills State park. All fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade student,the parish are invited to meet at the church and then travel to the park for the Cookout, fellowship, and games .that have been planned for the afternoon. The Junior Luther league meets regularly for recreation and educational events. The entire youth program for the parish is being coordinated by Parish Worker Kim Rehfeldt.
