Com petition is tough. I'm looking forward to a good year". One of the goals of the council, to review the counseling program at the high school., was discussed at length. Dennis Spraetz, the only counselor, was present to help the council understand his role and responsibilities. In previous years there were two counselors for every 250-300 students and a full-time aide. During the 1981-1982 school year only one c o u n s e l o r a c c o m m o d a t e d 7 0 0 students. The North Central association r e c o m m e n d s 1 . 6 counselors for the number of students at JHS. Spraetz's respon sibilities include per sonal counseling, career day, setting up college r e q u i r e d t e s t i n g , scheduling for classes and changes for the student body, special programs about drugs, alcohol and teenage problems for freshmen a n d s o p h o m o r e s , helping the college bound student, and job placement. He must also handle clerical duties and take care of the PPS area. It was agreed that there were problems regarding the minimal time, if any, available for personal counseling, the availability of the counselor to the students, and time needed to make students aware of what they need to do before entrance to college. The council suggested that a senior leadership committee be organized to instruct students on how to use the college catalogs and career pamphlets in the PPS area. A jcommittee chaired by Jacie Smith was appointed to prepare a statement which will be presented to the school board. Mike McEvoy is the new vice-chairperson. It was voted that Roger Dalan will fill the vacant membership position. The council members are Tom Fowler, Mike McEvoy, Jacie Smith, Mary Ellen Shine, Jim W e s t e r , K r i s t i n O r t , Roger Dalan, Donna Olekszy, and Linda Davidson. The next meeting of the council is scheduled for Sept. 27. WHO KNOWS? 1. Who said, "I came, I saw, I conquered"? 2 What does the term "feather bedding" mean? 3.
