"Oliver!" books, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart, is based on Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist", the beloved novel about an orphan boy growing up in London in the 1880's. The entire first act is devoted to soul-satisfying production numbers with plenty of widows and orphans to provide im mediate empathy for the audience. The wistful 'Oliver, (Jonathon Bechler, McHenry) is first beleagured by the righteous Mr. Bumble, nasty proprietor of the workhouse where indigent boys dream of "Food, Glorious Food!" Mr. Bumble is much nicer offstage to Jonathon, where he's recognized as the eleven-year-old's dad, Chuck. Bumble gets his ribs tickled by the Widow Corney (Kathie Cornelia, Woodstock) in an early character bit with comic overtones ("I Shall Scream"). Bechler is noted for his work in contemporary Christian music, and Ms. Cornelia has spent nearly 20 years working on Opera House productions. She is secretary to the WMTC board of directors. Action swiftly develops for poor Oliver, as he finds himself bartered to a gloomy undertaker, Mr. Sower- berry, and his wife. Van Vogel of Wonder Lake played for many years with C.W- Rice jazz band and is remembered in the northwestern suburbs for his fine radio work on the old "Crossroads" show from WXRD in Woodstock. He's an appropriately morbid Sowerberry. Mrs. Sowerberry is Virginia Zymonas of Crystal Lake, a free-lance artist with professional summer stock acting experience. She has appeared with Lakeside Players, Townsquare Players and the Independent Players of Elgin. Will Kepper is the thoroughly evil Bill Sykes. Kepper is a resident of McHenry who formerly lived in New York, and appeared there in Off Broadway productions of "A Chorus Line" and "A Midsummer's Nights Dream". Sykes terrorizes little Oliver in particular. Tension is finally abated when Oliver meets Mr. Brownfow ( Rick Wiedemann, Crystal Lake) and life begins to have special meaning for the homeless boy. Wiedemann was seen as Eugene in "Grease" with the WMTC 1980 season. During the day, he teaches at Harrison school in Wonder Lake. Incidental characters abound in all Dicken's plays, and included in "Oliver" are Tanya Hayward, 12, Wonder Lake, and Vito Gidio, 11, McHenry. English Street life is depicted with a full adult chorus including Steve Scheur, McHenry, and Sandi Schau, . Wonder Lake. Performances of "Oliver" are Oct. 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23 at 6 p.m. Sundays 8:15 p.m. all other days. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Woodstock Opera House at 815-338- 5300.
