It is Japan in the turbulent period after the civil war of the 16th century. A man takes refuge in a ruined temple to get out of the rain. He finds two other men there. The other men stare off into space -- asking themselves could it really be true. The first man wants to know what they are talking about. They tell him. There was a robbery, murder and abduc tion. One of the men found the body of the victim. Both men were at the police station when the different participants in the crime, including the ghost of the victim, are questioned. Each tells a different story. Which is the real story? The robbers'? The abducted woman's? The dead victims? None of them? All of them? Then it turns out that the man who found the body and is now telling the story may also be implicated, further confus ing things. This movie, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, stars one of the great male leads of all time -- Toshiro Mifune -- as the bandit. Clint Eastwood became a star imi tating Mifune, right down to the squint. And Mifune is never as great as when he's acting for Kurasawa. "Rashomon" is By James Smethurst funny, exciting, realistic and ultimately, optimistic.
