(Continued from page U) along with a consistent first place showing by Jackson, we could have a strong shot at second or third in the con ference," Texidore said. "Jackson is con sidered the favored in my opinion right now in taking the individual conference title." Also helping out on the varsity level is Chris Tennison and Steve Kalsch. So far Jackson has gone undefeated in four meets and Texidore Relieves even Lake ^urich and Warren will see its best runners having a hard time keeping up with Jackson. Texidore said his scouting reports show Lake Zurich to be about the toughest team in the conference and a good showing against the team could mean a great deal towards the end of the season. The outstanding sophomore has been Lawrence who took the individual .third place title in the Crystal Lake Central Invitational meet. Jeff Nichols and Mike Dodge are two returning sophomores also competing with the team, along, with two new sophomores • Bill Schmitz and Steve Sch: mitt. Endurance has been the primary focus of the team's training so far. "We've been doing a lot of hill work to build strength." Texidore added that the base of endurance must be firm before we can go on an and tackle the speed. "Speed is more fine- tuning work, which we will' stress closer towards the conference meet," he said. Until then, the team will have lots of practise at the home meets held at Glacier Ridge. "The course is ex tremely challenging because the runners have a variety of terrain to work out on," said Texidore. The present course is 2.6 miles and should be lengthened to three nvles before the end of the month. Spraetz said much of the early season practice has been focused on improving the team's net play. He added that he has emphasized the im portance of the basics too. " With a solid foundation, the girls will be able to (day a r.ore sound overall game." Johnsburg this year has switched from the Shark Conference into the Northwest Suburban Conference. Spraetz said the new conference will be a challenge for the team. "Overall, the con ference will be tougher competition than we've seen in the Shark Conference. However, I expect to see im provement from the girls throughout the season because of the level of competition." The team of 25 girls has three returning varsity players who will play an important role for the team.. Kathy Hartjes, a junior, is playing the number'one singles. "Kathy's excellent forehand and backhand strokes, make her an aggressive opponent," said Spraetz. Also returning is senior, Cindy'Guetzloff. According to Spraetz, Guetzloff put a lot of hard work into her game over the summer, which has greatly improved her game. "Cindy plays an attack game and moves to the net very well," added Spraetz. One of the sophomores who is playing number one doubles is Gail Jakubicek. She has had to be very flexible in playing with her alternatng partners Kim Colomer and Trina Marunde.
