"Well, you've got a tough schedule," he replied. "And you'll have to go 8-1 or better to make the playoffs." Second-year coach Don Penza second that observation. "It is tougher in the sense that we play bigger schools. But the (opposing) talent is the same as a Harvard or Marengo (former conference foes)," he said. Marian Central will play as an independent this season, although in other sports it has rejoined the West Suburban Catholic Conference. Thus, the Hurricanes state playoff hopes lie in unbeaten or not losing more than one game. Last season, the Hurricanes compiled one of the best records among McHenry County football teams. They went 7-2 overall and earned a co- championship with Rockton-Hononegah in the now disbanded SHARK Conference with a 5-1 mark. The Indians edged Marian in a point differential system, although the two teams split their two regular season games. A l t h o u g h t h e Hurricanes failed to make the playoffs, they did impressively rebound from 1980's 1-8 mark. And they hope to do it again. The Hurricanes will field a small, but ex perienced ballclub -- with a heavy emphasis on senior talent. The starting offense, for example, will be all seniors except for returning quarterback Chuck Hartlieb, while the defensive unit will have only two non- senirs.
