SAFETY HINTS by Secretary of - State Jim Edgar Bicycles, which are a source of fun and recreation for many people, are also frequently used by students as a means of getting to and from school. This fall, riders of all ages will be on our streets after school and on weekends. The bicycle is a slow- moving and highly vulnerable vehicle, and almost any -type of collision will .result in injury or death to the rider. As a motorist, keep these facts and safety tips in mind: 1 - A bicycle can be difficult to see irt traffic. Be alert at all times, especially after dark or when visibility is poor. Watch for cyclists along t h e r o a d o r i n i n tersections, and drive defensively when you encounter one. 2 - Be extra careful when passing a bicycle. Give the rider plenty of room and be prepared to make a quick stop. 3 -- If you are preparing to turn and a bicycle is between your vehicle and the side of the road, be sure the rider knows of your intention and is not in your path. If the cyclist is riding along »the right edge of the roadway, in accordance with the law, you must wait until he or she slows down and allows you to turn or proceeds through the turning area before you make your turn. If you have any questions about the Secretary of State's office please feel free to use our toll-free telephone number (800 252-8980). (A copy of the Rules of the Road and-or Bicycle Rules of the Road will be sent to you upon request. Write to Jim Edgar, Secretary of State, Springfield, 111., 62756). DOCTOR TALK Harold B. Ligon, MD The overall response to the new products named in last week's column has been quite good, and many senior citizens have gleaned restorative results from their use. Also, many young arthritics (and indeed there are many) have likewise been helped. However, there's one drawback; they are expensive. Therapy of this nature can cost a patient anywhere from 1 to 3 dollars a day. The average senior citizen seen in my office is hard put to pay thirty dollars a month for arthritis' medicine, considering the fact that he's on other more necessary preparations for heart, blood pressure, etc. ' I recently attended a heartening lecture by a noted rheumatologist who recommended two coated aspirin tablets five times daily for the g e n e r a l a r t h r i t i c patient. That's something to think about. It can be quite effective...and it's practicing economy and cost containment...if it's for you! CHRISTIANITY IS NOT JUSIA RELIGION IT IS A RELATIONSHIP!
