The struggle, though, had not been like that between a David and Goli ath. "All My Children" has always been a high-rated soap since its 1970 debut. The show has long been a favorite of such intellectual soap audiences as college students. Why is "All My Children" deservedly the best soap on the TV scene today? Doubtlessly because the show was the creation of Agnes Nixon, the medium's most successful writer. Mrs. Nixon has been writing soaps for more than 30 years. In addition to "All My Children," she created "One Life to Live" and served as headwriter of both "Another World" and "As the World Turns" when both alternately held the No. 1 position in the Neilsens in the '50s and '60s. Mrs. Nixon learned her craft under the late Irna Phillips, the "queen" of soaps who originated such serials as "Guiding Light" and "ATWT." Mrs. Nixon has the knack of creating complex characters who are neither stereotyplcally Agnes Nixon good nor evil but human. She mixes these characters into interweaving storylines that are usually at the same time entertaining and socially relevant. During the last year or so, Mrs. Nixon has empha sized the use of comedy, a much-neglected soap element. Among her crea tions are cornpone Opal Gardner, the hick mother played by soap veteran Dorothy Lyman. The char acter was an instant hit, helping Miss Lyman to win this year's Emmy for Best Supporting Actress. Miss Lyman successfully plays off Louis Edmonds, who plays her foppish mar ried lover, Langley Walling- ford. Susan Lucci, who has played villainous Erica Kane since the show's debut, has also had many comic moments this year, now that the character has suddenly become a suc cessful model a la Cheryl Tiegs. ©1982 Compulog
