Slowly but surely, the McHenry varsity football program is reviving. After a 2-7 record in 1979, Coach Joe Schlender's squad went 5-4 in the next year -- the Warriors' first winning season in more than a decade. They then roared off to a 3-0 start in 1981 before stumbling later in the season to finish 4-5. This year it's time for McHenry to "get over the hump," Schlender said. "Our goal is to have a winning season," he explained. "We always hope to be a contender (but) we have to learn to 'walk' before we run...we hope to 'walk' this year." Still, the Warriors may be at the point of gridiron respectability where they could win a good share of their games and also cause headaces for opposing Fox Valley Conference coaches and players. "There isn't a team that we can't beat," Schlender said. On the other hand, "there isn't a team that can't beat "I would say we're a year away -- but I can't say we won't contend (this seasoTfl Schlender said. "The National Football League has parity. I think the FVC is star ting to achieve parity." We anticipate participating in a number of close con tests in a very balanced FVC." An off-season weight t r a i n i n g p r o g r a m helped boost the wieght and strength of many individual players. "It's the biggest (team) physically we've ever had," Schlender said. "We're not used to h a v i n g k i d s t h a t ^big...it's the hardest kids have ever worked in the off-season. I hope it shows." Among McHenry's strengths is impressive lineman, including John Clewis, the 1981 defensive most valuable player. "He's a rock," s a i d S c h l e n d e r . T a l e n t e d s e n i o r r e c e i v e r s M l a d e n Rudman and Dennis Shaver are also back and will see action in the defensive secondary. On the offensive line will be returnees and captains Doug Mitzven and Todd Rehberg, both guards, Tom kucek at center and Dean Parsi, another guard. Many MCHENRY FOOTBALL COACH -- Joe Schlender, has 12 returning lettermen. They ar& left to right (front row); John Clewis, Mladen Ruftman, Steve Woo, Cianton Lane and Mike Love. (Standing) Coach Warriors will play both ways. But Schlender faces the task of rebuilding his offensive backfield, among other things. He's hoping to ac complish the task around quarterback and senior captain Mike Love and fullback Clayton Lane. Juniors may see a lot of action this season. They make up 24 of McHenry's 43 varsity candidates. Schlenderl's offense will work out of a basic Weak-T, which allows for a mixture of running and passing. He expects to make frequent use of his receiver corp and will pass as much as 25 times per game. McHenry will mix a variety of eight-man fronts on defense.
