COMMUNITY CALENDAR OH, MY GOSH! - On Friday, Oct. 1, in the midst of one of the birthday cetfebrations regularly held for Plaindealer employees, Mildred "Millie" Jeschke was totally shocked when a "hobo" interrupted the usual reading of cards to present her with a bouquet of balloons. The surprise was a gift from all of the birthday girl's co-workers. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Sorority Plans FISH Benefits Pi Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi is off to a roaring start on its new sorority year. It began with a Hawaiian Luau on Opening Day. Boat rides on the Fox River, Hawaiian food and volleyball were enjoyed by members and their families. Pi Alpha has big plans for this year, with an emphasis on community projects. Its main beneficiary for ways and means activities will be the FISH organization of McHenry. The kick-off project was running two game booths at the Saufen Und Spiel in Johnsburg. Recently, members assisted in recycling with the McHenry County Defenders and their largest un­ dertaking is yet to come when on Nov. 13, they will sponsor a benefit lun- ] BIRTHS Todd Austin is the name chosen by Stan and Charlotte Steiner of Americus, Ga., for their second son. The baby boy was born Oct. 4, at Pheby Putney hospital, Albany, Ga., and weighed 8 lbs. 9 oz. He was welcomed home by his brother Shannon, age 12. Maternal grand­ parents are Mr. and Mrs. Olon Ruis of Doerun, Ga. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Steiner of McHenry are the paternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. M. G. (Margaret) Reischauer, Jr., 2424 N. Alton, McHenry, became parents of their second child and first daughter on Sept. 21. The infant entered the world cheon for FISH, at a local restaurant. The luncheon will feature a complete dinner, prizes, and a guest speaker from FISH who will inform the public of the many services provided in the McHenry area. Pi Alpha hopes to make this a most memorable event. for the entire community and is counting on the usual generous response from mer­ chants and citizens of McHenry. All proceeds will be donated to FISH, along with canned goods and dry goods collected at the door the day of the luncheon. RUMMAGE SALE The Hot Lunch program of Im- manuel Lutheran school is having a Rummage Sale Friday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon. A large variety of household items, as well as clothing in excellent condition, will be available. The sale will be held in the lower gym of the school at 178 McHenry avenue, Crystal Lake. Parking is available in the lot behind the school, with easy access to the lower gym through the back door. Spirits, Crystal Lake. Moderately prices fashions will be shown, varying from teen to grandmothers; sportswear to high fashion; and accessories. Music will be provided by Dee Barbour of Columbia, Md. A former Crystal Lake resident, she was ac­ tively involved in the local club before her recent move. The speaker will be Scherrie Bicksler, whose topic will be "A New Mold". Held from noon until two o'clock, this luncheon is open to all interested ladies. Reservations are essential and may be made by calling Ruth, 653- 9408, or Lorraine, 385-5475, by noon, Oct. 11. McHenry American Legion Auxiliary The September meeting of McHenry American Legion Auxiliary No. 491 was called to order by first vice-president Pearl Cooper. After the usual opening ceremony, in­ stallation of officers was held, for those not present at the joint in­ stallation of post and auxiliary of­ ficers held in August. As president Dorothy Bennett resigned her office, moving out of state, Maria Guettler was voted in to take the office of president of the auxiliary. Marge Datz was installing officer and Pearl Cooper, installing chaplain for the following officers: Maria Guettler, president; Betty Lou Smith, chaplain; Dottie Messer, secretary and Sandy Schultz, treasurer. The charter was draped for Marie Lockwood and Martha Freund, by president Guettl&- and chaplain Smith. In their honor, a donation was made to the ' Veterans' Craft Ex­ change, and their names will be placed permanently on the "Memorial Honor Roll" on display at the exchange. Dottie Messer, past president parley chairman, announced the unit past presidents will have a meeting Oct. 13, with Reba Owen and Marie Howe as co-hostesses. The McHenry county past presidents will have a dinner meeting in McHenry Oct. 20. Pearl Cooper, 1981 membership chairman, received a citation for getting 100 percent in junior mem­ bership, from the Department of Illinois Membership chairman. Public Relations chairman Ruth Mrachek reported she gave citations from the Department of Illinois to the local newspapers for publicizing the auxiliary programs during the past year. McHenry unit hosted the McHenry County Council of the American Legion Auxiliary at the post home, recently, with 48 members present. Dottie Messer, McHenry unit is sergeant at arms for the council. Delegates from the McHenry unit for the coming year are Midge Scharf and Ceil Violett. The next county meeting will be held in Richmond. Ceil Violett, Ways and Means chairman, stated the semi-annual chicken dinner, sponsored by the auxiliary, will be held Sunday, Oct. 24, with serving time from noon to 4 p.m., and will be opened to the public. Tickets are being mailed to members and can also be purchased at the door. Much help from the membership will be needed. Pearl Cooper, Membership chairman, and Vickey Bottari, co- chairman, are asking members to send in their dues early, so the auxiliary can carry out their programs for the coming year. Refreshments were served by the immediate past officers. The* next unit meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 18, with Ceil Violett as chairman.
