FIFTY YEARS AGO (Takpn from the files of October 20, 1 Illinois took on a holiday at­ mosphere when thousands of waterfowl hunters in the state celebrated the opening of the hunting season. With the first day of the season falling on Monday, a record- breaking crowd of shooters were camped in the sloughs and marshes and on the lake after the first bags of ducks, mud hens and other fowl. Judge Henry Horner, Democratic candidate for governor and other state Democratic candidates paid McHenry a short visit when the candidate for governor addressed a large gathering at the K. C. hall. With the customary hot shots at the op­ posing political party, the speaker said that G.O.P. stands for "Great Old Promises". McHenry Post 491 of the American Legion will sponsor an Armistice Day carnival and dance at the Bridge ball room on Nov. .11. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 22, 1942). Frank C. Howard, a resident of McCullom Lake, and one of Chicago's leading industrialists, has recently been placed in charge of one of the largest foundries producing essential war material in the country. A magnesium foundry-described as the world's largest- is nearing com­ pletion in the Chicago area and wfyen in full operation early next year is expected to have a monthly capacity of more than 500,000 pounds of this essential war material. Daniel Jus ten, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. Justen, is now studying in a school of Medical Department Technicians at the Fitzsimmons hospital in Denver, Colo. He expects to become a surgical technician. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 17, 1957). At the special election held in the second ward of McHenry, Robert C. Newkirk received 130 votes to 30 for Glenn D. Dixon for the office of alderman. Newkirk will now serve Elmer F. Antonson's unexpired term of approximately three and one-half years. \ Ice skateirs, young and old, will be happy to know that extensive im­ provements have been made in rebuilding and resurfacing the area adjacent to the city baseball diamond. An organizational meeting of the County Clean Streams committee was at the city hall, called by the McHenry Chamber of Commerce. A representative group of citizens at­ tended in an effort to carry through the aims of the organization, to prevent and correct pollution in the Fox river, TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of October 18, 1972).. Vicki Peterson and Tom Giacoma were crowned to rule over McHenry high school 1972 homecoming. Sheila Buckley and Jim Stilling PAOE 5 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. OCTOBER 8,1982 were crowned queen and king during homecoming activities at Marian Central high school. Sheila is from Woodstock and Jim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stilling of McHenry. A total of 4,000 letters went into the mail seeking funds for the McHenry Rescue squad. The contents will outline to the public the need for financial supoort to keep this necessary community service in operation. Voice Of Democracy Contest Secretary Of State Offices Closed For Columbus Day All offices and facilities in the Secretary of State's office will be closed Monday, Oct. 11, for the Columbus day holiday, Secretary of State Jim Edgar announced. Edgar said downstate Driver Services facilities outside Cook county will be closed Saturday, Oct. 9 and will reopen Tuesday, Oct. 12. AU other offices and facilities will resume business Tuesday, Oct. 12. Edgar also announced that mid­ night Sunday, Oct. 31, is the deadline for car owners with license plate registrations expiring in October to display the orange 1983 stickers in the upper left corner of their rear license plate. "Approximately 839,000 renewal applications have been mailed to registered owners who are currently displaying the brown 1982 stickers that expire in October," Edgar said. Applications made by mail should be in the Secretary's office no later than Friday, Oct. 15, to ensure delivery by the deadline. Stickers may be purchased over the counter at Secretary of State facilities in Springfield and Chicago, and at 1,296 financial institutions, including 577 banks, 118 savings and loans, 600 Chicago area currency exchanges and one credit union. Effective Monday, Nov. 1, anyone driving a car with an expired brown, October 1982 sticker will be subject to a fine for improper registration. Sophomore, Junior and Senior students attending McHenry East, McHenry West and Johnsburg high schools are eligible to enter the thirty- sixth annual Voice of Democracy essay contest sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 and their Ladies Auxiliary. "Youth-Americas Strength" is the 1982 theme for the contest. Gerry Kuck, VFW Ladies Auxiliary president ahd local chairman for the contest states details are available at the high schools in McHenry and Johnsburg. Local winners will be awarded United States government savings bonds and will advance to com­ petition with winners from high schools in the VFW 5th district. The 5th district VFW winners also will be awarded United States government savings bonds. The district consists of posts and auxiliaries in McHenry, Lake, and small sections of DeKalb and Kane counties. The 5th district tvinnei «ill compete with winners representing the 18 districts in the state and will be the guest of the state of Illinois VFW and Ladies auxiliary in Springfield in February. The state winner will receive a five- day all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. where the national winner will be announced. The prizes at the national competition level will be scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $14,000. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 Commander and chairman, Martin Spoto urges students in this area to submit an entry in the contest and states the local deadline is Monday, Nov. 22. Reentry Program At MCC Three free activities sponsored by the McHenry County College Re- Entry program are planned in Oc­ tober. On Tuesday, Oct. 12 adults are in­ vited to attend an overview of in­ terpersonal communication in a 2:30 p.m. session led by English instructor Keith Severns. Severns also will lead a free session on non-verbal com­ munication at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 26. The third free session this month. Getting Started in Electronics, will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 25. In­ formation on careers in electronics will be shared at the session led by MCC Electronics instructor Joe Cornelia. Adults who would like to attend one of the free sessions may register by phoning (815) 455-3700, extension 231 and asking to sign up for free re-entry activities. Second Youth Health Fair Sponsored By Hospital McHenry hospital is presenting its second annual "Yellow Brick Road", a special health fair for children, designed to introduce youngsters to the workings of a hospital. Executive director. Kenneth G. Bast, said, "Many children do not experience a hospital setting unless they or a loved one are ill. We hope the Yellow Brick Road experience will help to allay any fears a child might have, whether tney are a prospective patient or are merely curious about what goes on when you are hospitalized." Yellow Brick Road is being visited by school children from McHenry, Crystal Lake and Woodstock, Oct. 4 through 8, and the public is invited to attend on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. until aeon. The location of Yellow Brick Road is the Carey house, a red brick building at the end of Waukegan road, just east of the hospital parking lot. Each of the rooms has been transformed into a particular hospital setting, including admitting, respiratory therapy, the emergency department, a typical pediatric patient room, radiology, surgery, ana the laboratory. Backdrops for the settings are scenes from the Wizard of Oz and the tour guides are dressed as the main characters from Oz, including Dorothy, the Good Witch, the Bad Witch, the Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow. In each setting visitors will meet the professionals who staff these departments in the hospital, and have a chance to understand how each of these areas functions.
