This week might be the week that goal might be reached. The Skyhawk opponent will be Grant. Also winless, except for a forfeit. While Johnsburg was busy losing to Grayslake 27-24, Grant was getting bombed by Warren 41-8. The loss to Grayslake was very disappointing, but Skyhawk Coach, Randy Oberembt says his team has recovered and are ready to go after Grant. "Our attitude is good. Our athletes handled it well," said Oberembt. "They decided the only way to im­ prove is to work hard and go out and get somebody this week." Oberembt says his team is com­ pletely healthy for the Saturday contest at Grant. Oberembt says the winless Bulldogs will be no pushover and one good reason for that is the Bulldogs running game led by two sophomore backs. Oberembt says 5-10. 150 pound Dave Rowden and 6-2 180 pound Eric Bengston are very good backs. "They are mostly a running team, but will throw the ball. We got to stop the run. They have been traditionally a running team." According to Obermebt, Grant also has a dangerous end in Mike Gier. Oberembt describes the Bulldogs as a very young and very hard working team. The Skyhawk offense has continued to improve each week. The running game has been the main weakness. "We will have to play multiple of­ fensive game. They have an excellent defense," Obermebt said. "We con­ tinue to improve. Our running game had 170 of our 316 total yards against Grayslake. We would like to continue along that level." Oberembt was very pleased with the performance of backs, Jim Bentz and Jim Hopp. The two combined for 165 of the rushing yardage for the Skyhawks. Quarterback Jeff Jayko was another Skyhawk who had a good afternoon and received praise from Oberembt. Jayko completed seven passes on 12 attempts for a 146 yards and n9t one interception. "He did a nice job," said Oberembt. "He had good offensive line protec­ tion. And five receivers caught a pass which says a lot for our receivers. He has really matured as a quarterback. "We will continue to throw the ball and take pressure off the running game." The Skyhawks lost 42-19 against Jacobs 36-19 against Batavia, but did managed to finish ahead of Burlington Central, as the Burlington team only attended the meet with one runner. The Skyhawks attended the meet with only five runners, because illness kept the remainder of the team from competing. However, only four runners were able to finish the meet. Jay Jackson was unable to compete the 5,000 meter race after building a substantial lead, when leg cramps forced him to be sidelined. Senior Jim Leon finished the race in seventh place, out of a Held of 17 runners, with a solid time of 18:23. Not far behind Leon was sophomore Mike Lawrence who finished the race tenth, with a time erf 18:44. The other Skyhawk harriers who finished were varsity members Chris Tennison at 20:50 and Ken Schoening with a time of 21:45. The only junior varsity runner to compete was Steve Schmitt who placed 18th, out of a field of 39, in the two mile course with a time of 13:48. "It was a non-conference meet, so I was not as concerned about this one, "said Skyhawk Coach Bob Texidore. "The lack of runners, due to injuries and illness didn't help and we went with Jackson and Leon who were both ill." The Skyhawks overall record dropped to 2-10 and remains unsuccesssful in obtaining any conference victories, with a record of 0-4. A postponed ruling saw the Skyhawks loosing its only conference win against Grayslake. It was taken away because Jim Leon was disqualified for cutting a cone in the 5,000 meter race last Thursday. With Jackson a definite hopeful for the state cross country meet, Texidore expected his team to be higher than its current last place in the conference standings. He believes however, that the team can moye up, "If we group together, with a little pushing it's possible we can comeback and beat Warren, Round Lake and Antioch." Warriors Prepare For Peoria The McHenry Warriors will take 43 other schools at the Peoria High Invitational Saturday. One of the schools favored to win it, York, has taken home the first place trophy seven times since 1968 and the last three years. Last year, McHenry finished second to York and will be looking for that kind of finish this year. "One of the big teams is York. We're going to try to get as close as possible to them," said Coach Bill Hutchinson "We would like to beat the fourth rated team, Springfield-Lamphier, for the second spot. V3J lhaw..
