: " Scholarships Awarded To Area Youth In 1972, the McHenry B u s i n e s s a n d Professional Women's club decided to become active in a Scholarship program! Since then, this monetary award has been presented to the f o l l o w i n g : 1 9 7 2 - - Catherine Elliott and Marge Brown; 1973-- Nancy Blake and Bar bara Larson; 1974-Anita Arndt and Diane Butler; 1975-Donna Bielawa and Cathy Scully; 1976-Sue Cable and Karen Freund; 1 9 7 7 - V i c k i B a z a n a n d < Diane Smith; 1978-Rondi Cunat and Jay Robison; 1979-Mark Patterson and Patti Condon; 1980-- Colleen Byrne and Eileen Ahern; 1981-Lisa Adams and Aruna Lahoti; 1982- Melissa Mayberry and Susan Smith. At a recent meeting of the club, members of the Scholarship committee read correspondence received by some of the a w a r d r e c i p i e n t s , revealing their ac complishments since leaving McHenry high school. Cathy Elliott attended S o u t h e r n I l l i n o i s university; graduated with a B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas, Austin; and- is currently studying law at night at the John Mar shall Law school, plan ning to reccive a J.D. in June of 1985. Nancy Blake attended Carthage college in Kenosha, Wis. for two years; transferred to N o r t h e r n I l l i n o i s university £nd received a bachelor degree in Communication Disor ders; got married; worked with deaf and hard of hearing children as an itinerant teacher; and last year was a substitute teacher in a high school classroom for learning disabilities. Barbara Larson at tended Moody Bible in stitute in Chicago, graduating with a diploma in Foreign Missions, and during that time worked with the Carrier Indians in British Columbia, Canada for a summer, doing mission work; attended West Suburban Hospital School of Nursing in Oak Park, 111., graduating with -a diploma in nursing and has since been employed at Memorial Hospital for M c H e n r y C o u n t y , Woodstock, 111., as an R.N. on a medical and telemetry floor. Cathy Scully received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, majoring in Main- streaniing the Han dicapped, with a minor in Outdoor Education, at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater; got married and is presently a seventh grade Language Arts teacher at Parkview Junior high school, Muk- wonago, Wis. Diane Smith graduated from Winona State university with a B.A. in Political Science. She was a member all four years of the Student Senate and in ho* senior year became the first woman president of the senate in the school's history; was always active in politics and is presently an executive secretary for the law firm of Basford, Heckt, Lockhard and Mullin, based in the new Pillsbury Center building in downtown Minneapolis, Minn. Rondi Cunat received a B.A. in Political Science- International Relations from .Northwestern university; attended Syracuse university's study center in Madrid, Spain, majoring in Spanish and Marketing; was a congressional in tern for Robert McClory; was on the Dean's list; and hopes to obtain an entry level position in the management or sales field utilizing her com munication, leadership and analytical skills. Mark Patterson is presently in his senior year at the University of Illinois, will receive a B.S. in Architectural Studies in 1983 and plans at that time to start his apprenticeship requirements. He is also working on a minor in Social Geography; has a cumulative grade point average of 4.2 on a 5.0 scale; made the Dean's list last Farf and got married last summer. Eileen Ahern attended Illinois State university, studying for a Music Therapy degree and upon learning about the limited job openings in that Held, switched to Music Education; got married and is presently a junior at Illinois State. Colleen Byrne majored in Physical Education for the Handicapped at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, during her freshman year; tran sferred to Northland college in Ashland, Wis. to major in Outdoor Education-Special Populations; plans to graduate from Northland and pursue a career in the field of her current major. Lisa Adams entered the University of Illinois at Champaign to major in a r c h i t e c t u r e ; w a s disenchanted with the bigness and impersonal traits of the school and transferred to* Marquette university in Milwaukee. Listening to the com ments of past scholarship winners, including their expressions of ap preciation, was very interesting and gratifying to all in attendance and learning that the Scholarship program has proven to be such a worthwhile endeavor prompted each one to pledge her continued support in the future. Woman Of The Year In 1974, the McHenry B u s i n e s s a n d Professional Women's club desired to recognize those women in the c o m m u n i t y w h o a r e outstanding through their career or service. They formed a com mittee and asked the public to cooperate by submitting names of women over 25 years of age, whom-they felt were deserving of such an honor. Bertha Stange was the first to receive the coveted award and was presented a plaque for the 1974 Woman of the Year. The tradition has continued through the years and the following women were similarly honored: 1975, Virginia Williams; 1976, Adele Froehlich; 1977, Lenora Frisby; 1978, Ilaverne Gregory; 1979, Mae Stinespring; 1980, Maurie Taylor; and 1981, I illian Bolger.
