The itors were ranked eighth in the state jn class four-A. .. ^ The Gators needed a win over the ^alriors to at least clinch a tie for the mfe, but the Warriors proved to be the Spoilers in the Fox Valley Conference at Metcalf Field on Friday night. There was no doubt it was Coach Joe lender's biggest win during his rare at McHenry^ yed before a Ismail crowd, the rjors forced a FVC title game etween Crystal Lake South and itral in an inter-city series. The tfluestreaks of Woodstock- were ited from the title contention by to Jacobs 26-25. >r Coach Bob Height was a 5 in ted man after the game. All Id say was "The McHenry team ^ jyed us. I don!t think we were idbking ahead to the Central game it week. We were beat by a fine > tpnight. Joe (Schlender) did a 1 job on us tonight." rrCoach Joe Schlender was not on efesad nine, but cloud 10 after the gne. He said before the game his Mmcould win. He had nothing but praised for his staff and players. He mentioned the defense, stating that the team of "Clewis, R eh berg, Biankenhorn, Beste, Parasi, Mitsven, Woo, Podpora, Mohner did a good job." Punter Scott Jus ten also had a Sciender went on to say, "we ran on sm better than any other team this We also out-blocked, out ickied them and that's the name of ! game, we beat them from the time we reached the field, until we caught the bus back to McHenry." As he walked off the field, Schlender said he felt the seniors had a tough year, but also remarked, " With this win and a win next week, they could have bragging rights for the rest of their lives." The Warriors kicked to the Gators to start the game and on the Gators fourth play, Chet Kopec raced 32 yards for a touchdown, only to have it called back due to a clipping penalty. This was the first of seven 15-yard penalties called against the Gators during the game. After the Warriors held and took over on their own 25, they marched to the Gator 40. The Gators held and marched to the Warrior 11 and on fourth down Bob Gerhard kicked a 29- yard field goal for a Gator 3-0 lead at 2:16 of the first period. In the early going of the second period, the Warriors grabbed a break when Dennis Shaver intercepted a Gator pass on the 20-yard line and a penalty against the hosts put the ball on the 10-yard line. Mike Love found Shaver all alone in the end zone for the touchdown. Mike Milinac then ran for the two point conversion and the Warriors led 8-3 at the 8:49 mark of the period. The remainder of the period saw both teams gaining little yardage and punting on fourth down, as the first half ended with the Warriors holding on to a slim 8-3 lead. With 9:12 left in the third period, Mladen Rudman took a handoff from Love, broke several tackles, plus fine line play and out-raced the Gator secondary for a 83-yard romp for the touchdown. The PAT was no good and the Warriors led 14-3. The remainer of the period saw both teams battle back and fourth until at the end of the period the Warriors had the ball on the Gator 40. Love lofted a pass to Shaver on toe Gator 11-yard line. Another Love to Shaver pass was completed in the end zone for the touchdown and the PAT again was no good and the Warriors led 20-3. The remainder of the game saw the Gators trying to get on the scoreboard, but the Warriors held and with the clock running out with the Warriors in control the final gun sounded and the scoreboard read Warriors 20 Gators 3. As Schlender reached the bus, he, turned and made a final statement, "Our defensive backs did the best job since I have been here and I just want to say I'm proud of each and everyone of the kids on the squad for a fine victory." What more can anyone add after a fine victory Friday night. BARBANSELL ROUND LAKE -- The Johnsburg Skyhawks had hopes of extending their newly started winning streak as they traveled to Round Lake, but before the first quarter came to an end it w^s obvious the Skyhawks could not hold the aggressive Panther rushers. The Panthers quickly halted the Skyhawks brief winning streak as they were trounced 34-14. A disappointed Skyhawk Coach Randy Oberembt was left with very little to say after the defeat. "We lost track of where we were at. We just didn't have it." The Panthers maintained possession of the ball nearly all of the first quarter. In fact, Round Lake only allowed the Skyhawks six offensive plays during the entire quarter. The Panthers scored on their first possession as running backs John Gulford and Mike Allen carried the ball 65 yards, with Gulford scoring the first touchdown and Allen carrying the ball for the successful two point conversion. The Skyhawks took over the ball, but were quickly charged with two offensive penalties which forced Skyhawk quarterback Jeff Jayko to pass the ball in attempts to gain the needed yardage. However, the pass on third down and 15 intended for Mike Hurckes was instead picked off by Guy Smith who returned the ball 13 yards. The interception gave the Panthers the opportunity to score once more, this time on Tom Magee's five yard pass to Bob Henry to build the Panther's lead to 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. The Skyhawk defense toughened during the second quarter as tackle Jim Bentz sacked the Panther's Galford for a 10-yard loss near the Johnsburg 11-yard line. The sack was followed by an offside penalty against Round Lake making it fourth down and 25 and a pass intended for Allen was knocked down by Johnsburg's Joe Majercik allowing the Skyhawks to take over on their own 26 yard line. The Skyhawks carried the ball down to the Panthers 12-yard line, but the fourth down pass to Tom Huemann was blocked by Panther Scott Brewer giving the Panther s the ball. Magee connected on a 50 yard pass to Henry after slipping thru Hurckes' hands which moved the ball deep into Skyhawk territory. With 36 seconds remaining in the half, Jerry Nichols tossed an 11-yard pass to Gregg Molidor for a touchdown increasing' the Panther's halftime lead to 20-0. ' The third quarter once again was dominated by the Panthers, while the Skyhawks displayed a performance similar to that of their first quarter. The Panthers capitalized on Skyhawk. penalties, fumbles and quarterback sacks and were able to score on a six yard run by Terry Cheeks. The extra point kick gave Round Lake a 27-0 advantage. Johnsburg managed a late fourth quarter rally and succeeded in putting points on the scoreboard. Jayko connected on two crucial passes, aq 11-yard toss to Hurckes and a 16-yard pass to Eric Bear, moving the ball within the Panther's five yard lineip Jayko threw a two yard pass to M.J. Anderson for their first touchdbwn, but the referees called Jayko's two point conversion pass to Bear a trap ball. Yet the Skyhawks did shatter Round Lake's dream of a shutout as Johnsburg made the score 27-6. Round Lake responded on their next possession by rushing the ball 62 yards with Gulford scoring their final touchdown, with the successful kick sending the Panthers well out of Johnsburg's reach with a 34-6 lead. However, the Skyhawks came to life again and took advantage of a holding penalty against Round Lake moving the team into scoring position. This time Bentz carried the ball in for the touchdown and the successful two point conversion pass to Hurckes allowed the Skyhawks to close out the game 34-14.
