He explained, "We're down 26 or 27 Republican senators. Without the veto power of the governor we're in trouble." He fears a spending spree may be forthcoming. Concerning his own election, Schaffer is very pleased. He won a resounding victory in the 32nd Senatorial district. In McHenry county, Schaffer topped Democratic challenger Darlene L. Degenhardt, 20,631 votes to 6,488 votes. Schaffer said votes were running in his favor by a margin of two or two- and-a-half to one in Boone, Winnebago and Lake counties. "Voting is the highest since 1970," he said. "When you have that good of a turnout you really can't complain. And when things go as well as they did for me, I think it would be tacky to complain." Earlier in the year, Schaffer faced a challenge from Rep. Donald Deuster (R-Mundelein). Forced by the Cut back Amendment, McHenry county was divided by senatorial districts. What used to be just one district for both the House and Senate -- except for a tiny portion around McHenry -- was sliced into three House and two Senate districts. People often forget about cigarettes, or fall asleep in ted while smoking. Last year more than 4,900 persons died in fires, ac cording to the council. About 80 percent of the victims were killed in the "safety" of their own homes, The Council encourages families to have primary and alternate escape routes from each room in their house, and above all, try not to panic during a fire.Take a few seconds to compose yourself and plan your exit. WHAT MEAN THESE STONES? November 7,1982 Backtround Scripture: Joshua 3 through 4. Devotional Reading: Joshua 4:19-24. Organized religions are constantly in danger of fall ing into one of two danger ous extremes. One of these is to dwell in the past and the other is to forget the past. * Perhaps this is the reason that the musical show, Fid- * d/er on the Roof, has always had so much appeal to me. Apart from being most en tertaining, each time I see it I am reminded that life is de pendent both upon keeping tradition and breaking it. Somehow we must keep a cre ative tension between for getting our traditions and keeping them. Passing Over Jordan Perhaps this is evident in the story recorded for us in Joshua 3 and 4. Having safe ly crossed the Jordan, God commands the people through Joshua to create a memorial with 12 stones. One gets the impression that perhaps these stones were still visible when the Book of Joshua was writ ten. At any rate, the 12 stones were part of Israel's tradi tion. Yet, the point of the story is not that the stones were to be honored, but that the stones were to point to some thing else: the safe passage over the river Jordan by the help of God. "When your children ask in time to come, 'What do those stones mean to you?' Then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord...So these stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever" (4:7). It is typical of human na ture to in time venerate the symbol, rather than that for which the symbol stands. When that happens, our tradition has become as empty--and often even harm ful--as that of the scribes and pharisees which Jesus condemned. God can con- is Your Home Really covered? You Shall Tell Them If we want to keep our tra ditions alive as a means thro ugh which God can speak to us and futu|| generations, then it is extremely import ant for us to'tefcch each gen eration the meaning behind them. All too often we simp ly pass on the symbols and traditions without making sure that they are still alive. And perhaps the reason that they do not lire for our chil dren and youth is that they no longer livje for us. If we have allowed our traditions to become meaningless rituals that we practice by rote and without understanding, how can we expect that they will mean something to the young er generations? It is also true that there comes a time when the old traditions no longer are chan nels of God's revelation. Then it is thiat, instead of clinging to the stones, we must find new ways by which God is able to speak to us. < (Based on outlines copyrighted by the Division of Christian Education.
