The announcements were made by Kelly's principal, William Dodds, and Paul's counselor, Denny Spraetz. The young students are now eligible to compete With other local winners from around the state for one of two $1,500 scholarships and an all- expense-paid trip to the national Century III Leaders conference, slated for March 4-7,1983, in Colonial Williamsburg, Va. State winners will compete for the national winner's prize of an additional $10,000 scholarship. . ;"v The Century III Leaders program is designed to bring together and recognize student leaders who show both strong leadership abilities and an interest in the future of America. They were judged on the basis of leader­ ship skills, school and community in­ volvement, • and a current events examination. They also wrote a short essay on a particular issue that challenges America in its third century. Runners-up in the competition at Johnsburg high were Lisa Boyer, M. J. Anderson and Scott McClory. This is the eighth year of the Cen­ tury III Leaders program, which awards a total of $218,500 in scholarships to 204 young leaders. Century III is sponsored and ad­ ministered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. This Is a scene from the Johnsburg high school production of "The Very Great Grandson of Sherlock Holmes". Ririgwood road. There will also be a special performance Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. for senior citizens, who will be admitted free of charge. "The Very Great Grandson of Sherlock Holmes" is about the great detective's grandson, Sherwood. Sherwood had not been keeping up the family tradition as a great solver of crimes until the day a young woman named Meg walked into his office. Meg feels that her employer's life is Hold Three Genealogical Classes At Club Meeting The November meeting of the McHenry County Illinois Genealogical society will be something entirely different and promises to be of most interest. To meet the growing concern of people in Genealogy, or tracing an­ cestry, the society will conduct three classes to be held that night instead of the usual lecture program. There will be something for everyone. One class will be "Beginnning Genealogy" (how to fill out forms and charts; Correspondence - where to write and what to ask for) conducted by Phyllis Bauer; A second on^is titled "Censuses (1790-1910) aim How to Use the Soundex System". It concerns what is found oh the various censuses and how to code surnames, given by an expert genealogist, Betty Massman of Cary. The third is being led by Roberta Smith, who is president of the society as well as a librarian, and is titled "Libraries in Your Genealogical Research" (How to Use the Card Catalog and Find Your Materials in the Library). All three workshops will be con­ ducted simultaneously and will make available a wealth of information. All interested persons are invited to at­ tend. The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Fellowship hall of the Grace Lutheran church, Washington (Rt. 120), and Tryon streeets, Woodstock. The society also announced, that its first major publication, a book titled "The Early Records of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Vol. I 1852- 1868" has been printed. It contains valuable family information of hundreds of early McHenry county pioneers in the form of baptism, marriage and burial records of that time; period. Riverside Drive, McHenry being threatened. She works as a scullery maid for the wealthy Harris Creastley. Sherwood agrees to take upon the job of preventing the murder of Harris Creastley. At the Creastley mansion the audience meets many hilarious characters including several maids, the butler, and two of Harris' relatives. After Sherwood Holmes interviews everyone at the mansion, a murder is committed, and Sherwood must solve it to keep up his family name. The cast of "Sherlock Holmes" includes students from all grade levels at Johnsburg high school. Holmes is played by senior Paul Metzger, and his assistant, Dr. Watson, is played by junior Rick Schaller. Other cast members include Lisa Boyer, Laura Carlson,, Dawn Dagens, Missy Davis, Ed Foster, FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 17,1932). The Fox River is being stocked with fish and before many seasons . roll around it will become a popular fishing spot. A total of 20,000 croppies, bluegills and perch from the Spring Grove hatchery were dumped into the river near the Johnsburg bridge at the John A. Miller home. In addition to this 5,000 black bass were put into the river during September. These were obtained from the federal government through Rep. Thomas Bolger. Friends of the Rev. Windham Bonham will be interested to know that he will be appointed assistant state's attorney in Cook county in consideration of his pre-election work. Mr. Bonham was admitted to the Chicago bar early this year. Little Mary Ann Noonan returned home from St. Joseph's hospital in Chicago and is recovering nicely from her recent operation. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 19, 1942). A class of 28 had their final hearing for citizenship in the court of Judge William L. Pierce. They all took a course of instruction at the Elks club in Woodstock, under the supervision of the Americanism committee of the lodge. Those from McHenry included Julia Zellinski, France; Anna W. Anderson, Sweden; Florence F. Svoboda, Canada; Gustaf A. Carlson, their record for purchasing War bonds. The fact that the October quota was acheived should not, however, lessen the effort to attain a still more creditable showing. The war is not over and McHenry county soldiers and sailors are still in the fighting line. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 14, 1957). A very important meeting of the McHenry County Clean Streams committee will be held at the McHenry V.F.W. for the purpose of discussing future projects and to elect officers. Chairmen are asked to bring with them the four additional members who will act on their committees. The new Presbyterian church for the McHenry area will hold its first Sunday morning service Dec. 1. The church is holding rites at present in the west barn in Eastwood Manor on Rt. 120 and Johnsburg road. Of­ ficiating at the Sunday rite will be Dr. Cummins. William Pictor has been elected to Jenny Jantzen, Debbie Swinford, Ray Sweden, from Ringwood; and Signe C. Tantillo, Wester. Scott Tvaroh and Kathy "The Very Great Grandson of Sherlock Holmes" is directed by Roger Zawacki, JHS drama director. Tickets for the play will be available at the door before each performance. Speakers at past con­ ferences have included newsmen Harry Reasoner, Howard K. Smith, Tom Brokaw, and Charles Kuralt; philosopher and futurist Buckminster Fuller, and the librarian of Congress, Daniel Boorstin. Paul, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Metzger, has been an outstanding student and active in athletics and activities at Johnsburg high school. He is presently ranked at the top of his class and plans to attend college next fall to study engineering. the board of the McHenry County Fair association, succeeding Clinton Martin of McHenry. He was among five new directors named to office in the county. The new board will meet Nov. 25, to elect officers and members at large. In the meantime it is hoped that the books of the last fair can be closed and the financial report made known. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 15, 1972). A contract in the amount of$l,296,000 was awarded Lakeland Construction Co. for road im­ provement of Rt. 120, from Draper road to the Front street intersection. McHenry County college officials learned that the Illinois Board of Higher Education has approved the college's building application. The college is now on schedule for the construction of the new campus. The new campus facility will be located northwest ̂ Crystal Lake on Route 14, nearLticas road. TheMVP award for McHenry cross­ country was presented to George Haines at the cross country banquet. Coach Joe Newton was the guest speaker from York high school, home of the 1972 cross country state champions.
