A Coaching Masterpiece Displayed Too often football fans become engrossed with what is taking place on the field and fail to see what is going on along the sidelines. I would like to make a few comments on the Warrior- Crystal Lake South football game last Friday night. From the press box looking across the field to the Warrior sideline, I had what would be called a "birds eye view" of the Warrior sideline. What I observed was a masterful job of coaching by the four gentlemen dressed in Warrior colors. Coaches Joe Schlender, Brian Wilson, Bob Doran and Mark Jadzak did what I would call an excellent job of coaching the Warriors last Friday night. When in the early going it looked as if the Gators would run the Warriors right out of Metcalf Field, some adjustments were made. Example, Chris Kopec the fine South tailback gained over 50 yards in the first period, but in the remaining three periods, he picked up a mere 33 yards. The Gators passing attack was no threat at all with a mere five of 17 with two interceptions. The adjustments in the Warrior defense, as the game wore on, stopped any Gator adjustments. . If game balls were awarded, I would give one to each of the four coaches. I realized the yers did their part, but when they come ck down to eartn, they will have to realize their coaches did an excellent job of preparing them for the game and a super job of coaching during the game. The Blue Streaks of Coach Bob Bradshaw are here tonight for the season's final game. The likeable Woodstock coach would like nothing better than to beat the Warriors. The Streaks were in contention, until the final four seconds last week. On the other hand, the Warriors are looking for a winning season and can come up with it with a victory. Toss out all previous On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt records, this should be a good one and one you won't want to miss. The Central-South winner will represent the Fox Valley in the state playoffs next Wednesday. Antioch or Lake Forest could be the opponent. Both are winners of their conferences. Or maybe they will have the Fox Valley winner play another team in the area. The parings will be made tomorrow night at the state office in Bloomington. Without the services of Steve Carby who was on a disciplinary suspension, the "running Warriors" placed second in the district last Saturday. Sophomore Chris Creutz (with a tip of the fedora) was the individual winner in the meet. With Carby back this weekend, the Warriors are ranked 12th in the state and naturally York of Elmhurst is the favorite for their 10th state title. The swimmers have the district coming up next week and coach Mike Shanahan is hoping some of the Warriors will qualify for the state the following weekend. Chuck Cuda and his second place Warrior golfers were honored by the Board of Education on Tuesday. According to the popular coach, the boys are still out on the links waiting for next season. We won't even mention the Crystal ball this week. Picking the Warriors to lose to South, had Pat Schlender giving me the needle, but if I can repeat this week for a Warrior win I'll do likewise. I'll take the streaks over the Warriors, hoping I get the needle again. Jacobs to beat Cary, Crown in a thriller to beat Dundee and for all the marbles I like Bill Mack and his Tigers over the Crystal Lake South Gators. Last season the'Gdtorsupset the Tigers and gave Cary-Grove the title and the Tigers want this one over there cross town rival. Marian to bounce back and beat St. Francis of Wheaton and Warren to drop the Skyhawks. Warrior Final Game Against Rival Streaks layers Get The Last Laugh Cheatam, Ron Mlyniec and Tom Johnson. The Hornets ended their season last weekend. The juniors finished third in the south division with a 2-5 record. They lost to Mundelein 25-0 in the playoffs. The seniors finished 3-4 in the south cftgfcion, also in third place. . The seniorslilso lost to Mundelein by a »core of 33-0. All „ final football games would be played * by the natural* rivals in the con- * ference. So one of the oldest rivalries in this part of the state will continue tonight ; at McCracken Field when Coach Bob ; Bradshaw's Blue Streaks take on * Coach Joe Schlender's Warriors. The Streaks were knocked out of the ; conference race last Friday in a last second loss tO\ Jacobs 26-25. The Warriors, meanwhile pulled off the upset of the season, defeating Crystal ; Lake South 20-3. Both teams would like to end the season on a winning note. "We are looking forward to playing the Streaks," said Schlender. "They have a fine team, but we also have a fine team." He added, "It should be a great game and we are looking for a victory." j With a win, the Warriors could end Sophomore the season with a winning record. They now have a 2-4 record in the Fox Valley Conference and 4-4 overall. Woodstock is 4-2 in the FVC and 5-3 overall. The Streaks are led by 5-8155 pound halfback Mark Rigby who is the leading rusher. Greg Bradshaw, son of the head coach, is the quarterback and is having a fine season passing for over 1,500 yards and has thrown eight touchdowns. Greg Fields, son of former East Campus principle Gary, is the leading receiver for the Streaks. 0 . ' In the line, the Streaks have Derron Goodwin, Corey Halderman, Dan Gibson, Tom Schroeder and Dave Andes. Flanker back George Birdsell is another Streak threat. The Warriors completely dominated the game at South last week and for just a few points here and there earlier in the season, they could be contending for the title tonight. j Skyhawks Win Despite Changes It has been a building year for the " Sophomore Skyhawk football team. % They had to contend with a new program and a new conference. Despite all these changes, the most visible change has been the record. ; < Last year's sophomore team could only manage one victory before the •" end of the season. This year's team has a record of three wins, four losses and one tie. Sophmore head Coach Jim Meyer says the program brought in by varsity head coach Randy Oberembt has focused on the basic fundamentals of football and the performance of a new offense and defense. "Not only have the players had to learn a new program, but the coaches have had to adjust too," said Meyer. "This is the first time I've coached a line and I've learned a lot. "I'm very happy with the team's effort. They are enthusiastic, hard working group and they've been in every game." He adds the team has a long way to go, "but the team is realizing they have more potential than they thought." One goal of Meyer's is to play as many players as possible. "Injuries have forced some guys to the sidelines. We've played 22 guys every game and none of the starting players have played both offense and defense." The sophomore team is already looking at preparation for the next football season by setting the weight training program. Teachers Bowling League "Sam you make the costumes too tight" must have been our motto last week because the scores were much lower. The highlight of the night was the last place team, the "Big Time Bowlers" took three games for the first time this season and also bowled the highest handicap series. The "none of the Above's" moved into sole possession of first place by a half game. Dee Stanish led them with a 181 scratch. In individual scores, John Sytsma had the only 200 score for the evening (2C2) and Wil Fasrell came close to a 500 series with a 493 scratch. Marcia Maule had a 176 and Margo Baranowski a 184 to lead the women individual scores. In the splits department; Rae Cameron and Elaine Rogers both picked up the 5-10 while Norma Losch and A1 Boeldt both got back to normal. The Tackle Box Let an efficiency expert look inside an experienced fisherman's tackle box and he would shudder at the sight. Tossed together in what seems to be an impractical mess are such things as lures, a spare reel, extra line, mosquito dope, a pair of rusty pliers, and perhaps a sandwich or two for lunch. The coaches of the McHenry Hor nets were well fed Tuesday evening as the members of their teams served the dessert in the fashion of the "ole pie in the face" method. The players that were awarded pies to throw into the face of the coach of .their choice were the ones that sold at essary.
