Of course, on the other side of the plank, thousands of people were paid to take some part in the election. The National Broadcasting Company paid four thousand people to get results to listeners. While waiting for a table at the Longhorn, John Lawrence came over to talk about the World Series. We think John was just as happy as his pal, Chuck Hiller, about the Cardinal victory. Norm Hoym was also feasting with a happy group and called me over to give me my dessert, a good cigar. No calories in that kind of dessert. Stating that it is our plan to got onto other trains of thought, those people told us they are comparative newcomers in McHenry and Want to hear more. r. ;p -- >*>'!<•: One lady said she has liyed her~ only two months. A man sajd> he be- lived here since the 50's, but is stiu i- newcomer. * -- v McHenry was settled in thehyear of 1836 as a part of Cook County. During the 1836 session jof the Legislature, an act was passed setting off McHenry and Lake counties from a part of Cook. The area was named in honor of General McHenry, a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War. In 1937 the county seat was located at McHenry. In 1938-39, Lake County was separated from McHenry County. There is history galore connected to McHenry. If our newcomers want more, I will pick up other items along the way. Newcomers probably never have heard about the McHenry Old Timer who predicted that Chicago would never amount to anything because "It is too far from Terra Cotta'. PICKUP: Don't be a show-ff driver. If you want to race, go to Indianapolis. Bernie Matchen, retired, has one of those business cards that give no information. The best part is: "When I have the urge to work, I lie down until the urge passes." College Honors There was dissatisfaction with the County seat being located on the edgi "of the county so in the 1842-43 sessi of the Legislature an act autho the people to select a new County sfeat. Centerville (now Woodstock) was the winner and the change was made in 1844. West McHenry (called Gagetown) came into existence upon the arrival of the railroad in 1854. It wasn't until 1872 that the village was incorporated. As a village there was great rivalry between the East and West sides. A compromise resulted in the Village President being chosen from one side of town for one term, then passing it on to the other side at the next election. Overcrickers! It was in May, 1923 that McHenry was incorporated as a city. Telephones came to McHenry in 1897, a water power plant in 1908, the Village water system in 1898, gas in 1912, sewer system in 1923, paving in 1923 and 1927. utstanding cholar Award Twenty-five incoming freshmen at Northern Illinois university have been honored with Outstanding Scholar awards from the NIU Foundation. "Y" Offers Cardiovascular Fitness Program This Fall The rocketing cost of medical care in America is just one of the reasons why YMCAs across the country are developing cardiovascular fitness programs in an effort to decrease the risk of coronary disease, Doug Neush- wander, physical director of the Lake Region YMCA said. "Preventive measures are a whole lot cheaper than medical treatment these days", Neushwander said. "Of course, YMCA cardiovascular fitness programs can't totally prevent coronary problems", he hastened to add. "But they are designed to help control some of the risk ~4attors associated with such diseased"?' Among the cardiovascular fitness programs being offered by the Lake Region YMCA are men's and women's exercise programs available mornings or evenings. Launched five years ago, the YMCA's National Cardiovascular Health program was designed in close cooperation with the medical profession and allied health per sonnel. 1 Ytar ......... $16.SO In McHenry Outside McHenry County County L7/i£ fashion <Si wt VI OO* J McHENRY OQIO" THIS WEEK'S "KEEP ON DIGGING" W i hj. i» i .
