A HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 (815)459-2641 by Ms. Flo Klemm The Helping Paws office recently had a visitor who suggested we print a few words on being a "good pet neigh bor". Cats: If your cat soils the neighbors' lawn, try having a litter box on your own property; if the cat chases their birds, have him wear a collar with bells (and an ID tag). Avoid over-' populating the neighborhood by spaying-neutering your cat. Dogs: Being on a chain all day is not a happy life for a dog and many people do not have a fenced-in yard. To avoid having your dog roam the neigh borhood, chasing cars, bicycles, children, cats, other dogs, and barking excessively - walk your dog on a leash (making sure he is wearing an ID tag), and the exercise may be good for you, too. This also solves the problem of your dog soiling the neighbors' lawn- garden area. As with cats, over population is a serious problem - consider having your dog spayed- neutered. All pet adoptions must be validated by the signing of a contract, along with the adoption fee which includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet of Helping Paws' choice, or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your choice. When adopting a pet through Helping Paws, please for your future reference, keep name, address, phone number of the person from whom you adopted pet, and adoption fee, by check, payable to Helping Paws. Members have spent recent weekends clearing the many miles of Snowblazer trails so they will be ready for use when snow falls. Actual marking of the trails with stakes and signs will take place in mid-November. The trail groomer has been serviced and is ready to go. The winter ac tivities calendar of planned events is ready, with such outings as trips to outlying areas for Friday night fish frys and Sunday brunch, as well as other trips making use of our trails and those of our neighboring clubs, and into Wisconsin. Snowblazers president Marv Taylor, and Mrs. Taylor were happy to represent the club at the convention of the Illinois Association of Snowmobile clubs in Moline the weekend of Oct. 15-17. They were able to bring much, valuable information back, including state grants available through registration fees. Snowblazer members are anxiously anticipating t.ie snow season so they can again enjoy their favorite winter sport. To have access to hundreds of miles of trails in northern Illinois and Wisconsin, everyone is invited to join the Island Lake Snowblazers. Meetings are the first and third Thursday each month at Mantzoro's restaurant in Island Lake. New members are welcome. 1 : CHOLESTEROL STUDY A team of nationally known researchers is trying to determine whether lowering cholesterol will affect heart disease.
