Catherine Spook, Uiisa Mattiolo, Giannai Garko. 1964 By Connie Passalacqua NBC has finally officially announced that "The Doctors" is a terminal case. "The Doctors' " last episode will air at the end of December, completing a 19-and-a-half-year run. The announcement con firms rumors that have per iodically floated through the daytime community for the last two or three years that "The Doctors," daytime's lowest-rated soap, was in danger of imminent cancellation. A decade ago "The Doctors" -- which focuses on the private lives of medi cal personnel at fictitious Hope Memorial Hospital -- was at the top of the Neil- sen ratings. The show had won two Emmy awards for Best Serial. The love duo of effusive Dr. Nick Bellini (played by Gerald Gordon, now Dr. Mark Dante on "General Hospital") and reserved Dr. Althea Davis (Elizabeth Hubbard) was among the most popular of all daytime couples. What was behind the slow fall of the show? The show enjoyed its highest ratings during the writing regime of Eileen and Rob ert Mason Pollack, who left the show in 1975, and who, for the last three years have scripted the nighttime soap "Dynasty." Some were noble in their achieve ments. Others were better left unmentioned. The show launched many performers' careers. Ellen Burstyn was on the show in 1965 when she was using the stage name of Ellen MacRae. Film stars Kathryn Harrold ("Yes, Giorgio") and Armand Assante ("I, the Jury") both appeared on the show. But perhaps the greatest praise should be saved for the show's longtime stars, who waded their way through both good and awful storylines -- James Pritohett (Dr. Matt Powers, chief of staff, since the show's beginning); Lydia Bruce (Matt's wife, Maggie); David O'Brien (Dr. Steve Aldrich); and Jada Rowland (Steve's wife, Carollee). ©1882 Compulog [ Soop Beat ] 'Doctors,' 19, expired, victim of low ratings
