I'll admit that you can make a pie out of the ordinary variety, but it is not nearly as tasty as one made from the true pie pumpkin. Where we lived we called the orange variety Cow Pumpkins and fed them to our cattle. I have seen steers walk away from a feed tank full of ear corn and go to one full of chopped up cow pumpkins. (Dessert). Some variety of squash make good pies. I believe the butternut is one. Rating pies from one to ten -1 would rate them as follows: Halloween type - 4 (?) Squash - ft Pie pumpkin -10 But even richer is a pie made from sweet potatoes. This kind of pie is very popular all thru the South, second only to Pecan Pie. Libby Company cans almost pumpkin, enough in one can sells forr about 79 cents. Their pkin pie mix requires only dition of milk and eggs (about $1.00). Seasoning is in the mix. Traveling thru a town not far from Springfield, I just happened to be there when they were celebrating "Pumpkin Week". A parade - bands - floats and a Queen. They were also selling individual pies and cider at stands on their Main Street. Libby has a canning factory there - signs up farmers to plant acreage and furnishes the seeds. When harvested, they are bought by the ton. Pies on sale in stores and bakeries, I am sure use only pie pumpkins. Heinemans Bakeries used to make a superior pumpkin pie, but since they were taken over by a large cor­ poration, they are not quite as good. Mrs. Smith's pies are best.
