It's the only thing. If you don't win, you are a loser. And if you don't win the big one, you are a lo6er. Look at the California Angels. They were winners until they lost in the American League playoffs to the Milwaukee Brewers -- then they were branded losers and Manager Gene Mauch was forced to resign. It's a crazy attitude to take, when 90 percent of the other teams never made the playoffs. But that's American sports. But it's good to know that there are some people out there in the sporting world with a logical attitude towards winning and losihg. The McHenry 'Warrior golf team was just completely dominating everybody they jriayed, until they reached the state meet. There they played nip and tuck with New Trier; finally losing to them. The Warriors finished second, but Coach Chuck Cuda wasn't complaining. "We'll take' second. It's better than third." Cuda said that at the McHenry Warrior award night held at West Campus Thursday night. He was a proud coach -- so proud, he announced that the entire team was named as the most valuable player and most improved player. How about this for an MVP's name? Tom Neumann, Brad Adams Kirk Barnicle, Steve Svec, Mike Bauml, Chris Vehring. "We did have an outstanding season," said Cuda. "For us, golf doesn't start in fall. We start in spring. We play all summer. This is what makes an outstanding golfer. The record proves it." He went on to explain how the team did throughout the season and then came to that famous regional tournamnet which was held at McHenry Country Club. The team shot a record 290 and he remarked, "The school hasn't shot that well in the 30 years I have been here." ******** "When you lot* at it -- all the tangibles involved. The 4-5 record is a losing record, but I 'nave a difficult time looking at it that way." That remark was made by Coach Joe Schlender about his 1962 football team. And you have to agree with him. The Warriors were probably one of the best 4- 5 teams in the Chicago area. It could be the Warriors were one extra point kicker from a Fox Valley Conference championship. "I feel we were not beaten in any game," he said. He called the win over Crystal Lake South the biggest win he ever enjoyed. Both John Clewis ana Dennis Shaver shared the most valuable player award. Clewis also was picked as the best defensive player. Dean meet, Hutchinson said it was still a Creutz was named the most runner. valuble runner for the girls' team Saunders. ******** 7 A .500 season. That was the goal of the girls' to Coach Gary Gray. was a 5-7 record. But Gray Sport Talk Mike Lamb Sports Editor Parisi was the most improved player and Todd Rehberg was the most courageous lineman. ******* Coach Bill Hutchinson of the cross country team didn't have much of a lecture prepared; he just rattled off statistics that told the story. He reported the girls were 11-2, the sophomore boys team was 10-2 and the boys' varsity team was 14-1. That added up to a. 35-5 record according to Hutchinson. He also reported that the Warriors have a combined record of 412 wins and 132 losses since cross country was started at McHenry High School. Even though the Warriors didn't make it to tennis team, according The tea «v,fell short witl wasn't disappointed. / "In tennis there ar-e three singles players and two doubles. That means teams just play seven players. In a rebuilding year, 15 different girls' played for us. They could have played exhibition matches, but just not the same." Gray announced Julie Larkin was most valuable player and Kris Sorling was the most improved player. ******** Volleyball Coach Pam Schaffer had the same problems that Gray .had with the tennis team. "The record just really didn't do justice," said Schaffer. "With only one returning lettermen, these kids came a long way. They just did a lot better job than the record shows. We'll have five starters back and hopefully we will improve next season." The most valuable player was Fox Valley All- conference player Andee Norton. Deb Koerber was the most improved player. ******** As far as record go, the girls' swimming Coach, Mike Shanahan, really didn't have too much to report. His team only managed one Win. However, the one positive aspect he was able to report to the audience was the seven school records broken. Four girls' had broke school records: Terri Blume, Monique Betancourt, Laura Clewis and Peg Chilvers. Terri Blume was the most valuable swimmer and Paula Hiller was the most improved swimmer. ^PAG^^PLAINDEALER^T^KSDAY^JOVEMBERJS3M982 Parks & Recreation u you're serious about getting into shape, this program is for you.
