Lady Warrior Cagers Will Survive On Leadership, Experience f rtut i - > - r niurt i, urA tivibtn iao*. CINDIKINSALA I The girls' varsity basketball coach, • Pat Wirtz, is looking forward to a new " and improved year of girls basketball • this season. > Since the team only lost one senior • from last year, experience and team 'leadership will highlight the team's f survival. | To opeiPihe season, the team has two non-conference games. The first game is against Wauconda on Dec. 9 • and the second on Dec. 16 against [Grant. These two games will help Wirtz find a winning combination to \ bring the team into the thick of the conference championship. After a slight break from their two • opening games, the Warriors will work to do well in the North Chicago Tournament Dec. 27-29. The team is also looking forward to improving last year's record of 7-7 and moving up in the overall standings. While working on these goals, the Warriors will also fight for. a victory over Crystal Lake South, an undefeated team last year. To accomplish their goals, the team is changing last year's play and strategy plans. Last year the girls were often tagged as playing con servatively. This season, Wirtz thinks it will be more possible for fast- breaking and more shooting with more overall team ability. "It is strictly an iffy situation right now," said Wirtz. "I have the leaders, the playmakers, some speed, lots of experience and a wealth of desire. If we stay injury free, if the girls realize their potential,if we put our 'talent together, then we can do it." Six returning letter winners have the experience and leadership that will help pull the rest of the team together. Karen Karpavicius, a senior, has been on the varsity team as a starter since her freshmen year. Last year she was voted on to the Fox Valley All-conference and McHenry All-County teams. She was the Warriors leading scorer, rebounder and co-captain of the team. o, Terri Blume, a senior, also played Momentum Cagers Into If the Johnsburg Warriors have anything going for them going into Northwest Suburban Conference basketball play this weekend, its momentum. The Skyhawks will carry a 3-0 record into its first NWSC game at- Wauconda Friday. The Marian Central Holiday Tournament Champions will also visit an un defeated Grayslake team Saturday. "It's still a tough Northwest Suburban Conference," Skyhawk coach, Ben Beck. "It's nice to have a little momentum going into con ference play. Our set priorty is to win that first conference game. We have put some preparation into Saturday's game, but right now we are gearing up for Wauconda." The Skyhawks will have to try for that first conference win without the services of Brian Suidak. The junior is out with a ankle injury and Beck does on the varsity team as a freshman and became a full time starter her sophomore year. Last year she received All-county honorable Mention. She was also co-captain of the team. Another senior, Debbie Koerber, is in her third year of being a varsity player. Three more seniors, Cissy Pinkstaff, Lynne Podpora and Kelley Brough are all second year varsity players. A sophomore, Renee Mezzano, will help the team with her speed and ball- handling ability. Greta Larsen, a junior, will also help the team with her speed and also her playmking ability. Other players who will help the team are juniors; Sara Prust, Andee Norton and Kris Keevil. The Warriors conference schedule opens up with three away games. On Jan. 6, the team faces Jacobs, Jan. 8 Dundee and then play Crown. All three games should show at least a bit of a challenge, but Wirtz says, "How good they will be is hard to say. but our oppostion isn't sure either and they're not taking us for granted like they used to." Jim Leon suffered a mild concussion last week, but he will be ready for Wauconda. The Skyhawks will also have the services of Jeff Jayko who was out with a football injury. w Wauconda is off to its best start ever, according to Beck. Their only loss came against Harvard by six points at Harvard. Beck says his Skyhawks "need to push the ball, up the floor and play'solid defense and rebound" to have any success against Wauconda. Beck says Grayslake has two three year starters in the starting lineup. One of those two is 6-foot-6 Russ Nygard and is the first big man the Skyhawks will face this season. Beck says the entire Grayslake team has good height and the guards are real quick.
