In choosing, it's a good idea to look for a mark or statement on the package or the unit itself that the detector has been tested and certified by a recognized testing organization. If you don't see such a mark, or if you don't recognize the name of the testing laboratory, you can't be sure that this detector model meets minimum performance standards. Next, look at the instructions, and ask yourself these questions: 1. Are The Instructions Clear And Complete? They should tell you how to install it, suggest where to put it, and provide guidance for testing and maintenance. 2. Can You Do The Installation Yourself--Safely? Is there a step-by- step explanation, with enough diagrams to tell you exactly what you'll need to do? This is a good time to decide if you should do the in stallation yourself. If you don't feel confident on a stepladder, for example, you may want to ask a friend, relative, or carpenter to do it for you. 3. What Maintenance Is Required? Do the instructions tell you how to test and clean the unit, and how often? If the unit uses batteries or replaceable AY. Protect Young Trees From Hungry Mammals By Erin Hynes, Extension Adviser, Agriculture, McHenry County As winter comes and their food supply decreases, many mammals turn to your trees and shrubs when mealtime arrives. You'll need to protect your ornamentals soon to ensure they'll survive to spring. Plant-feeding mammals rely on annual plants and tree leaves for their food. When the plants die and snow covers the ground, tender young trees and shrubs become the only food source for rabbits, deer, porcupines, mice, and other mammals. Older trees have a tough bark which protects them from feeders. The cheapest, most effective tree ^protectipn is mechanical. Surround fli'tfll* with a cylinder of hardware cloth or poultry netting. Be sure the cylinder is several inches larger in diameter than the trunk, and put braces between the cylinder and trunk to prevent rubbing. The protection should extend well above the snow cover. Commercial tree protectors of aluminum treated cardboard, and nylon are also effective. Cover the back up to the bottom branches. You can use commercial repellents for small branches and bushes. Brush or spray thiram < Arasan) in January or February. You may need to repeat applications after warm spells or precipitation until other plants appear in the spring. You'll reduce the chance of damage. by providing winter food for mammals. Be prepared to supply food all winter, since the animals depend upon a regular food source. The county conservation district (338- 1405) has information on providing food for wildlife. Gardner Gifts Now that Thanksgiving is over, it's time to plan your Christmas gifts.
