Vets Ask Expanded Service Hours by Joanne Springman SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE McHenry county veterans are seeking more help from the veterans services officer who visits here once a week. A resolution adopted this month by the McHenry County American Legion council asks that the time the veteran services officer spends in the county be expanded from one to three days a week. The council represents 14 American Legion posts in the county. Howard West, judge advocate of Woodstock American Legion Post 412, who prepared the resolution, said the action is backed by other county veterans' organizations, including two World War I barracks, four Veterans of Foreign War posts and the Polish Legion of American Veterans. "We don't know if three days really will be enough," West said, "but it's got to be better than only one." West said action was spurred by remarks from Ray Becker, the county veterans services officer, at a council meeting in October. Becker conceded then that one day a week is not sufficient time to con- West estimated refrigerator. Adults. He said the state Veterans Affairs commission was created by the Legislature after World War II to assist veterans and their dependents with compensation, pensions, em ployment and medical, educational and other claims. Due to the caseload, West said, most clients have to wait to be heard and many cases are postponed or other wise delayed. Active in veterans affairs since 1946, West said he per sonally has been contacted about people who have had difficulties in obtaining benefits. As examples, he cited delayed benefits to a disabled veteran in a nursing home and to a veteran's "Vidow. "We have been receiving reports from various sources," West said. "These are some of the most frightened people I've ever come across." • Becker, who works out <4 the commission district office in De$alb, estimated he handles about 25 cases each Tuesday when he is in WoodsPpck at the McHenry County courthouse. \ On Monday, Wednesday arid Friday, he is in DeKalb, and on m tin toToiir inlhfeeft and sometimes beyond," Becker sai "Some days I don't eat lunch, and sometimes I don't even get a coffee break." Becker said he tries to stay in his courthouse office until he has seen all the people who are waiting.. Even then, he said he usually does half the paperwork here and half in his DeKalb office. In addition to the veterans here, Becker estimated there are at least another 16,000 wives or widows and probably twice that number of children. & Becker said his weekly schedule prevents him from being in two places at once, but he added, "If I had a wish Ms. Stage was taken to McHenry hospital by the McHenry Area Rescue squad for further examination and treatment. list, the biggest thing I could use is. some help." Becker said he was assisted by a full-time CETA employee who managed the office on a day-to-day basis and helped move cases along more rapidly. "But Reaganomics took care of that," Becker said. He said he could not discuss specific cases, but added, "Generally speaking, there have been cases which would have been done more quickly if I had more time or help or both." West said copies of the local veterans' resolution are to be filed with the director of the state Department of Veterans Affairs, the chairman of the state veterans affairs advisory board, Sen. Jack Schaffer (R-Cary) and Rep. Richard Klemm <R-Crystal Lake). SAFETY HINTS By Secretary of State Jim Edgar F r e e z i n g * t e m peratures which have an adverse affect on people also can affect the performance of .cars, trucks and other v e h i c l e s . W i n t e r w e a t h e r r e q u i r e s drivers to use additional care and patience. One of the first things you notice when tem peratures fall is that it takes a little while longer to warm up your engine. Attempting to accelerate too quickly when the engine is cold can result in it sput tering *Wd stopping. Starting into traffic too abruptly can result in a dangerously stalled vehicle. Be careful when backing out of your driveway. Back up slowly, stop, look into your rear view mirror and to your left and right. Once you have backed into the street, it may take a few extra . seconds to move for ward if the pavement is slippery. Caution is especially important when streets and roads are wet, snow packed or icy. If you stall in traffic, it is more difficult for other vehicles to stop. When approaching a busy thoroughfare, do not enter or try to cross unless there is plenty of room between vehicles. Waiting for a safe opening increases the possibility of avoiding an accident if, your engine stalls.
