Golden age of toy boats The Forbes magazine collection of rare toy boats provides the basis for "Titantic in a Tub -- The Golden Age of Toy Boats," to air Monday, Dec. 13 on PBS. Narrated by Rex Harrison, the 30-minute special explores the fascination with maritime technology from the early part of the century, with the use of vignettes featuring young boys and their model boats. Also shown are film clips and photographs of famous ocean liners, naval vessels and maritime battles outlining naval histo- fy,. "Toy Boats" outlines the rapid development of rparitime technology that took place from the 1890s to the ^SOs^when ocean liners doubled in size and speed Battleships evolved into huge dreadnaughts. Then submarines changed the nature of naval battle. Then it was found that the once mighty dread- naughts fell victim to the advent of aerial attack. The development of these vessels inspired thousands of miniature toy boat copies of every size and description. Unfor­ tunately, as with the vessels they emulated, there are few toy boats left from that era. All of the toy boats shown in the special are from, the collec­ tion of Forbes magazine, which includes more than 300 vessels.
