(Continued from pag* 6 ) emerges to claim the postjon. The Hurricane coach plans to alternate between Andy Hartlieb, Dave Kruse, Dan Lalor and Gary Tonyon. "We'll basically go with 7-8 kids (playing regularly)," Eokus ex plained. Being a small squad, the Hurricanes will have to compensate for- lack of height by relying on pressure tactics. "We'll need the type of defense that makes things happen all over the court," he said. Taking advantage of turnovers, the Hurricanes hope their quickness and speed will be enough to make up for the lack of height. Marian went 1-2 in its season opening tournament. "I think, at times, we played pretty good ball, PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10.1982 Rokus said. "We had some foul problems at times and we had some turnover problems at times. "We lost a tough one against Burlington and held Johnsburg even until late in the game. Overall, I'm not really disappointed. We could be 2-1 or 3-0." . ' } Marian received a taste of the WSSC competition last Friday, losing 53-51 to Marmion in Aurora. Rokus, 47, has coached and taught at the Woodstock Catholic school since 1967, serving as sophomore coach, then assistant varsity coach before taking over the top job in 1978. A 1967 ^Northern Illinois University graduate, Rokus earned degrees in social studies and physical education. He played basketball and tennis. Beck: Skyhawk Cagers Need A Floor Leader Johnsburg Skyhawk basketball coach, Ben Beck, has a job to fill and has been taking in applications all week. The job is floor leader of his basketball team. Floor leadership has been a large problem for the Skyhawks since Jim Leon was injured during the Marian holiday tournament according to Beck. The second-year coach hopes to find the player he needs by Friday's game against Antioch at the John sburg gym. We have been emphasizing floor leadership in practice," said Beck. Beck says Leon will be out for an indefinite time and the Skyhawks have been trying to make the needed adjustments to offset his absence. I Since that absence, the Skyhawks lost two Northwest Suburban Con ference games over the weekend. Friday,.- the Skyhawks lost to Wauconda 60-54 and then lost to Grayslake 58-49 Saturday. Antioch, meanwhile, won their first game Friday against Round Lake. The Panthers have experienced a slow start because of the success of the football team in the playoffs. "Antioch has some good size and possess some pretty good outside shooters," said Beck. "They will play some man to man and zone against us. We will have to be very strong on the boards to keep them in check and put pressure on the ball." Beck says the NWSC has shaped up to be a very tough and well balance conference since the start of the season. All the ball games have been close. Need To Play At Their Best The Warriors will have to be at their best tonight when Paul Judson will bring his tall and talented Dundee Cardunals to Buckner Gym for a Fox Valley encounter. The Cards lost a heartbreaker to Gary Collins Gators last week and will be out to make amends tonight. The Warriors with a split last weekend, will be looking for win number two in the Fox Valley.* A little more scoring zip and better rebounding, will be of great help to the Ken Ludwig crew. Last week they actually won a game at the free throw line. It doesn't happen often, but if the Warriors can get some help from the charity line, they will do alright this season. As Coach Ludwig has pointed out many times this season, consistency must be achieved to become a winner. We are looking forward to a real good ball game and don't forget the early starting time in the FVC this season. The sophomores will get under way at 6 p.m. Someone forgot to tell the officials last week at Cary and both teams were warming up quite a long time. The "Rassling Warriors" lost a close match to Stevenson last week 27-25. Russ Bunday at 98 ?3unds, Mike Love at 138 pounds, along with 01 pounds and Eric Gaza all won or tied in their matches. Mike Shanahan's swimmers finished fourth in the Hoffman Estates Invitational last week. Bob Schaeffer had his best time ever in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.8. Mike McNish placed in two events, the 50 and 100 yard freestyle: Pat Wirtz's girls basketball team open their season this week and play Grant here next Thursday at 6 p.m. Several downstate coaches are getting together to put a proposal before the I.S.H.A., to increase the classes in basketball from two to four. It will be very very interesting to see what kind of a response they will receive on the proposal. 9 * Going down memory lane, we take you back to the 1964-65 season, when Cliff Fulton's Warriors defeated North Chicago 60-53. East Campus was rjggking that night as the teams battled down to the wire. Wayne Hiller, the stellar guard of the Warriors, led all scorers with 17 points. It was night he will never forget as those 15-footers saw nothing but the bottom of the net. 1 >• McHenry 60 North Chicago 53 North Chicago: Kirn 2-0-2 4, Spriggs 6-4-4 16, Woods 3-0-3 6, Brogan 4-3-3 11, Jones 1-1-4 3, Sims 6-1-2 13, Waaramaki 0-0-1 0, totals 22-9-19 53.
